The Department of English and Related Literature seeks to appoint a Research Associate to join the AHRC-funded ‘Print Matters’ project, led by Professor Helen Smith. This exciting project combines high-quality research into matter and materiality with a commitment to establishing Thin Ice Press: the York Centre for Print as a leading centre for research and public engagement. The successful candidate will have a track record of exciting research into text technologies and embodiment. Applications from researchers who engage effectively with questions of race, gender, the medical humanities, and/or disability will be particularly welcome.Applicants will hold a PhD in a relevant area or have equivalent relevant experience. Scholars who identify as Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic or Global Majority are strongly encouraged to apply as they are currently under-represented within the Department and the Centre. The panel will be happy to consider applications for part-time working or a job share.The successful candidate will collaborate with Smith and the wider project team to build a research network and bring to fruition an edited collection exploring the connections between bodies and text technologies from the medieval period to the present day. They will co-organise a major, interdisciplinary conference, on ‘Useless Knowledge’, and make a substantial contribution to the planning and effective running of the inaugural Print Matters summer school. They will work onsite at Thin Ice Press: the York Centre for Print at least two days a week during their employment, developing new skills in letterpress printing and making an effective contribution to the public engagement and impact aims of the project.The successful candidate will join one of the world’s leading English departments, which boasts an outstanding research record, a distinctive international outlook, and a deep-rooted commitment to excellence in learning and teaching.
