Job PurposeTo make a leading contribution to the ESRC-funded URBAN RETROFIT UK research project at the UK Collaborative Centre for Housing Evidence (CaCHE) and Place and Built Environment subject group within the Division of Urban Studies and Social Policy.The Division of Urban Studies and Social Policy is a leading centre for innovative, interdisciplinary and impactful urban research on pressing global challenges. CaCHE is a UK-wide collaboration and a leading independent centre for the production, analysis and dissemination of research related to housing and place. Its administrative hub is at the University of Glasgow in the Division of Urban Studies and Social Policy.URBAN RETROFIT UK is a three-year UK-wide project focusing on repairing existing places by adapting urban form to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions, protect the environment and support sustainable lifestyles, including via infrastructure programmes such as separated bike lanes, planning policies that encourage high-densities, and community-based projects like urban greening. It is the headline project of CaCHE’s ‘Place’ theme and has a particular focus on ‘scaling up’ urban retrofitting through planning and development systems.The position requires expertise in either urban planning, property development or human geography. It would be desirable for the candidate to have specialist knowledge of policymaking for urban sustainability and experience conducting research with community-based partners.The successful candidate will be a key member of the URBAN RETROFIT UK team supporting the Principal Investigator and Co-Investigators in the delivery of a complex, multi-city programme of research. They will be directly involved in data collection, analysis and the production of research outputs, and will also support knowledge co-production and dissemination with planning, property and community stakeholders.The position is based at the University of Glasgow, however, the successful candidate will also work with co-investigators at other UK universities that are part of the ESRC project team, including the University of Sheffield, Cardiff University, University of the West of England and Ulster University. A parallel Research Associate position is being advertised at the University of Sheffield and we urge interested candidates to apply for both roles.Main Duties and Responsibilities:Perform the following activities in conjunction with the Principal Investigator (PI) of URBAN RETROFIT UK as appropriate:1. Take a leading role in the planning and conduct of assigned research in accordance with the project objectives.2. Survey the research literature and environment, understand the research challenges associated with the project and subject area, and develop/implement a suitable research strategy.3. Conduct primary research to support the project, and undertake analysis and interpretation of all data, maintain records and databases, and draft progress reports and papers as appropriate.4. Write up research findings/outcomes for publication in leading academic journals, trade journals and the media for disseminations as appropriate.5. Establish and maintain a personal research profile and reputation and that of the Centre/School/College/University through a sustained track record of independent and joint publications of international quality in high profile/quality refereed journals, enhancing the research impact in terms of economic/societal benefit, gathering indicators of esteem and identifying opportunities for knowledge exchange.6. Present work at international and national conferences, at internal and external seminars, colloquia and workshops to develop and enhance the research profile of the School/College/University.7. Take a leading role in developing and maintaining collaborations with colleagues across the project and in the broader School/College/University and wider community (e.g. URBAN RETROFIT UK project partners).8. Take a leading role in team/group meetings/seminars/workshops and School research group activities to enhance the wider knowledge, outputs and culture of the School/College/University.9. Take a leading role in the identification of potential funding sources for continuing research and assist in the development of proposals to secure funding from internal and external bodies.10. Perform administrative tasks related to the activities of the project and School, including budgets/expenditure.11. Contribute to elements of teaching within a clear and established programme and carry out associated admin as assigned by the Head of School and in consultation with the PI.12. Engage in personal, professional and career development, to enhance both specialist and transferable skills in accordance with desired career trajectory.13. Undertake any other duties of equivalent standing as assigned by the Head of School and/or PI.14.
