Research AssociateCollege Of MVLSSchool of Biodiversity, One Health & Veterinary MedicineGRADE 7Job PurposeWe are looking for an ambitious and motivated Research Associate to contribute to an exciting new project on data-driven Sustainable Aquaculture working with Prof Martin Llewellyn, Dr Sofie Spatharis and Dr Simon Babayan. The successful candidate will join a consortium of Aquaculture Industry partners from UK, Norway and Sweden to work towards developing quantitative tools that will boost the sustainability of salmon and seaweed sectors. These projects involve the deployment of state of the art mobile marine aquaria and close integration with colleagues from the aquaculture industry as well as leading UK universities working in marine systems – Plymouth, SAMS, Stirling, Aberdeen and the Roslin Institute, Edinburgh.Salmon and seaweed marine aquaculture are facing existential challenges that originate from the plankton. Specifically, salmon gill pathology and seaweed biofouling are driving important financial losses to the industry, both mainly caused by species originating from the zooplankton and phytoplankton. The successful candidate will contribute to the generation and compilation of diverse data streams from this project (eDNA, biotic, abiotic, transcriptomic) and undertake quantitative analyses using Machine Learning approaches to drive forward our understanding of factors affecting fish gill health and seaweed biofouling. Daily interactions with diverse industry and academic colleagues alongside skills development and training will provide a perfect platform to launch a career in data-driven marine biology and aquaculture.Project partners are world leaders in coastal ecology, marine biodiversity and eDNA metabarcoding. The post will involve a mix of dry and wet-lab work and the candidate will join an exciting, friendly and experienced research team with opportunities for secondment across UK, Norway and Sweden.Main Duties and ResponsibilitiesPerform the following activities in conjunction with and under the guidance of the Principal/Co Investigator:1. Take a leading role in the planning and conduct assigned research individually or jointly in accordance with the project deliverables and project/group/School/College research strategy.2. Document research output including analysis and interpretation of all data, maintaining records and databases, drafting technical/progress reports and papers as appropriate.3. Establish and maintain your research profile and reputation and that of The University of Glasgow/School/Research Group, including contributing to publications of international quality in high profile/quality refereed journals, enhancing the research impact in terms of economic/societal benefit, and gathering indicators of esteem.4. Survey the research literature and environment, understand the research challenges associated with the project and subject area, and develop/implement a suitable research strategy.5. Presentation of work at international and national conferences, at internal and external seminars, colloquia and workshops to develop and enhance our research profile.6. Take a leading role in the identification of potential funding sources and to assist in the development of proposals to secure funding from internal and external bodies to support future research.7. Take a leading role in developing and maintaining collaborations with colleagues across the research group/School/College/University and wider community [e.g. Academic and Industrial Partners].8. Take a leading role in team/group meetings/seminars/workshops and School research group activities to enhance the wider knowledge, outputs and culture of the School/College.9. Take the lead in the organisation, supervision, mentoring and training of undergraduate and/or postgraduate students and less experienced members of the project team to ensure their effective development.10. Perform administrative tasks related to the activities of the research group and School, including Budgets/Expenditure.11. Make a leading contribution to Teaching activities [e.g. demonstrating etc.] and associated admin as assigned by the Head of School and in consultation with Principal Investigator.12. Keep up to date with current knowledge and recent advances in the field/discipline.13. Engage in personal, professional and career development, to enhance both specialist and transferable skills in accordance with desired career trajectory.14. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School/Director of Research Institute.15. Contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan, World Changers Together.Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and ExperienceKnowledge/QualificationsEssentialA1. Normally Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 [PhD] in Marine Biology, Quantitative Ecology or related discipline; alternatively possess the equivalent in professional qualifications and experience, with experience of personal development in a similar or related role[s].SkillsEssentialC1 Sufficient depth of relevant research experience, normally including sufficient postdoctoral experience in a related field, appropriate to an early career researcher.C2 Extensive IT and data analysis/interpretation skills as appropriateC3 Aptitude in analysing, generating and compiling ecological data.C4: Excellent communication skills [oral and written], including public presentations and ability to communicate complex data/concepts clearly and conciselyC5: Appropriate workload/time/project/budget/people management skillsC6: Self-motivation, initiative and independent thought/workingC7: Problem solving skills including a flexible and pragmatic approachC8: Excellent interpersonal skills including team working and a collegiate approachDesirableD1: Experience with bioinformatics analysis of metabarcoding and other ‘omic datasets.D2: Experience with Machine Learning methodologiesExperienceEssentialE1 Proven ability to deliver quality outputs in a timely and efficient manner.E2 A track record of presentation and publication of research results in quality journals/conferences.E3 Ability to demonstrate a high degree of independence as illustrated by identification of project objectives from assessment of the literature, design and analysis of experiments and drafting of papers.E4 Experience in undertaking independent research.Additional InformationOur School is committed to equality, diversity and inclusion.
