Research AssociateChronic Rodent ElectrophysiologistCollege of Veterinary Medical and Life SciencesSchool of Psychology and NeuroscienceGRADE 7BackgroundWe are looking for a postdoctoral research assistant to undertake a project working with Prof. Kate Jeffery and Dr Mick Craig, investigating the origin and purpose of a type of neuron that we recently discovered in the anterior thalamus. These neurons resemble the well-known hippocampal place cells but are in a different structure: one long associated with memory. The project entails tracing the connections of these neurons, characterising their electrophysiological activity and then manipulating this chemogenetically. The successful applicant will have experience in single-neuron electrophysiology, ideally during behaviour, and a passion for understanding the neural foundations of cognition.Job PurposeTo make a leading contribution to a BBSRC-funded project on the neural processing of space in the thalamus of freely behaving rats. The successful candidate will be expected to set up and run the behavioural electrophysiological experiments, analyse data and contribute to the formulation and submission of research publications.Main Duties and Responsibilities1. Take a leading role in the planning and conduct of assigned research individually or jointly in accordance with the project deliverables and project/group/School/College research strategy, as well as in accordance with ethical constraints as specified both in law and in local ethical guidelines and policies.2. Take responsibility for ensuring that relevant research equipment is safe and maintained in good working order, and that users of the equipment are appropriately trained and supervised.3. Undertake organisation, supervision, mentoring and training of less experienced members of the project team, such as undergraduate and/or postgraduate students, as required by the line manager.4. Document research output including maintaining records and databases as well as analysis and interpretation of all relevant data.5. Contribute to the preparation, submission and revision of papers and other outputs to be submitted to appropriate peer reviewed journals or other fora, collaborating with others as appropriate, and respecting principles of Open Science where possible.6. Keep up to date with current knowledge and recent advances in the field/discipline.7. Work in a collegial manner with colleagues, including appropriately acknowledging all team members’ contributions, and participating in collaborative events such as joint research projects, or journal clubs and other similar activities, as required by the line manager.8. Present work at international and national conferences, at internal and external seminars, colloquia and workshops so as to develop and enhance our research profile.9. Engage in personal, professional and career development, to enhance both specialist and transferable skills in accordance with School/College/University regulations as well as desired career trajectory.10. Contribute to the overall activities of the research team and department, including provision of a limited amount of undergraduate teaching (lectures and seminars), and administrative tasks as required by the line manager.11. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the line manager/Centre head/Head of School.12. Sufficient depth of relevant research experience (including experiments, data analysis and write-up), appropriate to an early career researcher and revealing ability to work independentlyE2.
