Job title:

Research Associate in Early Medieval History – Making the March project

Company

University of Manchester

Job description

Applications are invited for a research associate in medieval History to be employed on the Leverhulme Trust funded project ‘Making the March: Contesting Lands in the Early Medieval Frontier’. This project is directed by Dr Andy Seaman (Cardiff University, Principal Investigator) and Dr Charles Insley (The University of Manchester, Co-Investigator).During the later first millennium AD, the landscape known today as the Welsh March became a contested frontier zone between Welsh and Anglo-Saxon kingdoms. This frontier is of fundamental importance for our understanding of early medieval Britain, but its existence is rarely considered by scholars. Making the March offers the first interdisciplinary, multi-scalar analysis of the creation and development of this 200km-long frontier. It will provide a holistic view of the frontier and restore it as a crucial part of the fabric of the British landscape. It will also create a platform for new research on medieval frontiers more broadly. You will work alongside a multi-disciplinary team based in Cardiff and Manchester to explore particular aspects of the evolution of ‘The March’ before 1100: to elucidate the origins and development of the distinct social and political institutions of the frontier, including territorial and ecclesiastical organisation, legal structures, and their relationship to centres of authority. You will contribute to the project outputs, namely a monograph edited by the Principal and Co-Investigators and the Senior Research Fellow (Prof. Keith Ray, Cardiff), as well as outputs of their own in appropriate scholarly publications. You will have a PhD or equivalent in an aspect of medieval British history pre-1100 and expertise in Latin as well as at least one relevant medieval language (Old English, Old/Middle Welsh). What you will get in return:

  • Fantastic market leading Pension scheme
  • Excellent employee health and wellbeing services including an Employee Assistance Programme
  • Exceptional starting annual leave entitlement, plus bank holidays
  • Additional paid closure over the Christmas period
  • Local and national discounts at a range of major retailers
