Research Associate in Electrical Drives for Aerospace

This 1-year research associate post is based in the Power and Energy Division within the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. The Power and Energy Division specialises in high voltage technologies, energy networks, power conversion/electrical drives and power electronics and is the largest UK academic group in this area with a long-standing international reputation for power engineering.This project is funded by GKN Aerospace / INNOVATE (ATI). It is a collaborative project with several industrial aerospace companies and the University of Newcastle. The objective of the research program is to develop, build and test an aerospace propulsion motor for a regional size aircraft fueled by liquid hydrogen. The electrical propulsion motor and the associated drive will be cryogenically cooled to improve the operating efficiency and mass. The particular focus of this project will be the design of the cryogenically cooled motor. The cryogenic motor work will be carried out at Manchester and will include material testing at low temperatures, design and test on a small laboratory scale motor prototype before moving onto the full scale motor design, build and test.We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated research assistant looking for a challenging opportunity in the electrification of aerospace and who can communicate and work collaboratively with the academic and industrial partners in this large consortium project. The applicant will have a PhD in a relevant degree (or about to submit) and/or relevant equivalent experience.
