Job PurposeTo make a leading contribution to the ‘Resilience of Anthropocene Coasts and Communities (RACC)’ project working with Professors Larissa Naylor, Dr Mingshu Wang and Dr Martin Hurst.The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to the formulation and submission of research publications and research proposals as well as help manage and direct this complex and challenging project as opportunities allow.Main Duties and Responsibilities1. Take a leading role in the planning and execution of research into coastal risks associated with erosion and flooding of anthropogenic coasts in the face of changing environmental conditions.2. Work with collaborators and project partners to build on existing mapping of coastal climate change hazards (e.g. sea level rise amplified erosion and flood risks) and assessment of pollution and waste release to assess historical landfill pollution risks.3. Collate interdisciplinary, primary and secondary, multi-faceted (e.g. social, ecological, geomorphological) and multi-scalar (nested), relevant geospatial data on coastal environments.4. Develop models for future risk and vulnerability assessment based on combining erosion and flood hazard mapping with social vulnerability and landscape characteristics, notably historic waste and artificial made ground for both soft sediment and urbanised coasts.5. Engage in collaborative and networking activities (e.g. website updates, stakeholder engagement, Network+ events) to build project awareness, facilitate data collection (e.g. from citizen science) and share project outputs with practitioners and communities including coordinating and adding content to the project website and other reporting mechanisms.6. Document research output including analysis and interpretation of all data, maintaining records and databases, drafting technical/progress reports and papers as appropriate.7. Establish and maintain your research profile and reputation and that of The University of Glasgow/School/Research Group, including establishing and sustaining a track record of independent and joint publications of international quality in high profile/quality refereed journals, enhancing the research impact in terms of economic/societal benefit, and gathering indicators of esteem.8. Survey the research literature and environment, understand the research challenges associated with the project & subject area, & develop/implement a suitable research strategy.9. Presentation of work at international and national conferences, with practitioners, at internal and external seminars, colloquia and workshops to develop and enhance our research profile.10. Take a leading role in the identification of potential funding sources and to assist in the development of proposals to secure funding from internal and external bodies to support future research.11. Take a leading role in developing and maintaining collaborations with colleagues across the research group/School/College/University and wider community (e.g. Academic and Industrial Partners).12. Take a leading role in team/group meetings/seminars/workshops and School research group activities to enhance the wider knowledge, outputs and culture of the School/College.13. Take the lead in the organisation, supervision, mentoring and training of undergraduate and/or postgraduate students and less experienced members of the project team to ensure their effective development.14. Perform administrative tasks related to the activities of the research group and School, including Budgets/Expenditure.15. Make a leading contribution to Teaching activities (e.g. demonstrating etc) and associated admin as assigned by the Head of School and in consultation with Principal Investigator.16. Keep up to date with current knowledge and recent advances in the field/discipline.17. Engage in personal, professional and career development, to enhance both specialist and transferable skills in accordance with desired career trajectory.18. Undertake any other reasonable duties as required by the Head of School/Director of Research Institute.19. Contribute to the enhancement of the University’s international profile in line with the University’s Strategic Plan, World Changers Together.Knowledge/QualificationsEssential:A1 Normally Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 12 (PhD) or alternatively possess the equivalent in professional qualifications and experience, with experience of personal development in a similar or related role(s)A2 Specialist up-to-date knowledge of coastal risk analysisA3 Specialist theoretical and practical knowledge of GIS theory and development, including geospatial database management, geo-visualization, and web-GIS.Desirable:B1 Specialist knowledge in combining social data with other types of geospatial data on natural hazards, ecosystems and/or landscape characteristics.B2 Specialist knowledge of working with datasets from different time periods and levels of accuracy.SkillsEssential:C1 Extensive geospatial data analysis/interpretation skills (GIS, python geospatial libraries) as appropriate.C2 Excellent communication skills (oral and written), including public presentations and ability to communicate complex data/concepts clearly and concisely.C3 Excellent interpersonal skills including team working and a collegiate approach.C4 Appropriate workload/time/project/budget/people management skills.C5 Extensive IT and statistical data analysis/interpretation skillsC6 Self-motivation, initiative and independent thought/working.C7 Problem solving skills including a flexible and pragmatic approach.Desirable:D1 Experience of organising events (e.g. workshops or training sessions) with project partners and wider stakeholders.D2 Experience of working in an interdisciplinary and/or transdisciplinary team.ExperienceEssential:E1 Sufficient depth of relevant research experience, including sufficient postdoctoral experience and/or industry experience in a related field including some of the following fields: geospatial analysis, data analytics, computing science, hazards, risk analysis appropriate to an early career researcher.E2 Experience on GIS platform development (i.e., WebGIS), which integrates and intercalibrates diverse geospatial datasets.
