We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled postdoctoral research associate to join our interdisciplinary health data science team based within the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Bath, under the leadership of Dr Theresa Smith.This role is part of the . The AI4CI Hub is a collaboration between a consortium of seven partner universities (Bath, Bristol, Cardiff, Exeter, Glasgow, UCL and Ulster).The Hub’s ambition is to pursue cutting edge research at the intersection between the fields of applied AI and Collective Intelligence across five application domains (Pandemic Resilience, Smart cities, Financial Stability, Health Ecosystems and Environmental Intelligence) and two cross-cutting themes (Human-Centred Design and Infrastructure and Governance).Research within each application domain and cross-cutting theme will be pursued by a team of academics, postdocs and PhDs working with academic and non-academic stakeholder partners from relevant sectors: from AI software companies and start-ups to FinTech firms to NHS trusts, city modelling labs and government departments.The successful candidate will be responsible for developing a package of work for the Healthcare Ecosystems Theme to explore how novel artificial intelligence based analytical methods can enhance decision-making processes in health care delivery and self-management for conditions such as diabetes, arthritis, anxiety, and depression. Addressing challenges related to data quality, bias, privacy, and scalability will be embedded throughout the project.This role will initially be focused on developing and evaluating machine learning and statistical modelling tools to predict and classify disease trajectories using large scale health records databases to answer questions such ‘Can we cluster the typical longitudinal patterns of a disease?’, ‘Do these clusters correlate well to the effectiveness of treatments?’, ‘Can we confidently inform newly diagnosed patient on how their disease will evolve?’, ‘Are there patient groups that are not well served by current clinical practice?’About the role:The successful candidate will work with Dr Theresa Smith and collaborate with Dr Aisling O’Kane and her team at the University of Bristol. You will conduct fundamental research in statistics and machine learning as well as deliver case studies designed with Hub stakeholders. You will also be involved with synthesising and disseminating outputs from relevant work as part of a wider programme of knowledge exchange at the AI4CI hub.
