Research Associate in Microalgal Biotechnology
University of Manchester
This graduate research associate position will be based in the group of Dr Jon Pittman in the De-partment of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Manchester. More information about the research interests of the Pittman group can be found here: http://www.manches-ter.ac.uk/research/jon.pittman/. The short-term position is focused on evaluating the manipula-tion of microalgal biomass for improved use as a feedstock for feed, food, drug and biofuels pro-duction. Recent research findings demonstrated that stressors, such as non-mutagenic doses of electromagnetic radiation are able to increase the performance of a microalgae culture, in partic-ular with regard to metabolite yield and biomass without effecting cell viability. This project will further validate these findings to demonstrate viability of the process at a larger scale and with alternative microbial strains. The project will involve the validation of recent research findings to demonstrate proof-of-con-cept for commercial viability. This will require the cultivation of microalgal strains, the experi-mental characterization of the strains following stress exposure using physiological and biochem-ical methods to quantify biomass and metabolite changes, and the analysis and dissemination (through report writing and presentation) of the data. The project will also involve interaction with industrial collaborators, and so an essential part of this role will be to communicate and further develop the project with collaborators. The RA will report directly to Dr Jon Pittman. The successful applicant should have a strong background in microbiology, biotechnology, or another relevant biological science-related discipline, and research experience. The successful applicant must also have excellent communication, presentation, interpersonal and teamworking skills, and should have, or expect to attain a BSc, MSc or PhD degree (Or equivalent). What can you expect in returnThe University will actively foster a culture of inclusion and diversity and will seek to achieve true equality of opportunity for all members of its community. What you will get in return:
