Research Associate in Neutrino Physics
University of Manchester
The Particle Physics group at the University of Manchester has an opening for a post-doctoral research associate in experimental particle physics who can take a leading role in the construction of anode plane assemblies for the DUNE Far Detector, and in analysis of data from the SBND experiment. The Manchester Neutrino group consists of three academic members of staff, post-doctoral researchers, PhD students, and engineering and technical staff. This post will be based at the University of Manchester (Schuster Building), but will require travel to Fermilab, SURF, CERN and the Daresbury Laboratory. The Manchester group is responsible for the quality assurance of anode plane assemblies (APAs) produced for the DUNE Far Detector through the use of a digital wire analyser device (DWA) to measure the tensions and ensure the continuity of the 4,000 wires on each APA, as well as metrology on the 30,000 printed circuit boards (PCBs) that secure the wires to the APAs. The post-holder will be responsible for operation and analysis of DWA data from the 137 UK-build DUNE APAs, and take a role in the analysis of PCB-metrology data. The Manchester Neutrino group is also playing a leading role in the Fermilab SBN Programme through both the MicroBooNE and SBND experiments, with interests in beyond-Standard-Model searches and neutrion-nucleus interaction measurements. The post-holder will analyse data from the SBN Programme, aid in the supervision of PhD students on the SBN Programme, and publish results in peer-reviewed journals.Applicants will hold a PhD (or equivalent) in particle physics, have programming experience with C++, Python and ROOT, and experience using Linux operating systems. Experience with data analysis from liquid-argon detectors, and the LArSoft framework, would be desirable. The Particle Physics group at Manchester is one of the largest research groups in the UK with over 100 members, composed of both world-leading experimental and theory research groups. It has an outstanding record of contributing to the design, construction, operation, and exploitation of particle physics experiments and in advancing the theoretical models underpinning these and future experiments. The group has significant roles in experiments at the LHC: ATLAS and LHCb, Fermilab: Muon g-2, Mu2e, SBND/MicroBooNE and DUNE, the SuperNEMO and neutrinoless double-β decay experiments at LSM, the NEXT double-β decay experiment at Canfranc, BESIII at BEPC, and Darkside at LNGS.The School/Department is strongly committed to promoting equality and diversity, including the Athena SWAN charter for gender equality in higher education.
