Job description
This is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious individual with a PhD and the ability and confidence to undertake a 24-month research project. Start date is March 2025 or a mutually agreed later time.This research associate position will be devoted to research on “Randomized Numerical Linear Algebra for Optimization and Control of Partial Differential Equations (PDEs)”. It is one of two positions funded by EPSRC (grant EP/Z533786/1). It will be supervised by Prof. Stefan Güttel (University of Manchester) and Prof. John Pearson (University of Edinburgh). The research will involve the use of randomization to devise numerical solvers for large-scale eigenvalue problems, reduced-order models, and PDEs, applied to problems from optimization and control. As such, the candidate should have a background in numerical linear algebra and, more generally, numerical analysis.A record of some high-quality mathematical reports and/or publications, as well as coding skills (e.g. in MATLAB, Python, C) are essential. You will closely collaborate with a second postdoctoral researcher based at University of Edinburgh. The project team also involves two industrial partners, FESTO and Arup, who will provide guidance and pathways to produce highly impactful work through direct industry integration. As such, you are expected to be able to communicate your work effectively to practitioners. You will be part of Manchester’s world-leading Numerical Analysis Group, providing a friendly and vibrant research environment, and will have an office in the modern Alan Turing Building.
