AcademicJob Category Faculty Non BargainingJob Title Research Associate in Plant Bioengineering of Specialized MetabolitesDepartment Research | Bohlmann | Michael Smith Laboratories | Faculty of Science (Joerg Bohlmann)Posting End Date March 21, 2025Note: Applications will be accepted until 11:59 PM on the Posting End Date.Job End Date Mar 31, 2026The expected pay range for this position is $68,923 to $76,000 per yearResearch Associate in Plant Bioengineering of Specialized MetabolitesThe Michael Smith Laboratories at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, invites applications for a Research Associate position in Plant Bioengineering of Specialized Metabolites in the laboratory of Professor Joerg Bohlmann.Applicants must have a PhD in plant biology or plant biochemistry, a minimum of four years of postdoctoral research experience, and a track recorded of successful research accomplishments documented with first-author peer-reviewed publications covering at least three of the areas of expertise in plant specialized metabolism, plant biochemistry, plant genomics and plant metabolic engineering, as well as documented experience with successful research grant applications.The successful candidate will have demonstrated research experience with each of the following methods and technologies: Plant specialized metabolite analyses using GC-MS and LC-MS, flavonoid metabolite profiling, computational and functional plant genome analyses for gene family discovery, gene cloning, heterologous expression of plant enzymes of specialized metabolism, enzyme characterization using in vitro assays, plant bioengineering using transient transformation of Nicotiana benthamiana.The Research Associate will need to have excellent communications and presentation skills as documented with previous conference presentations, be highly organized, have the ability to manage time effectively, and capable to multitask by working on multiple projects over a period of time. They will be required to have exceptional attention to details, strong documentation skills and able to meet deadlines, as well as be able to work well in an academic setting, with ability to work independently and collaboratively.Responsibilities will include:

  • Conduct research on the biosynthesis of montbretin-A and related metabolites
  • Bioengineer montbretin-A biosynthesis in Nicotiana benthamiana
  • Carry-out LC-MS analyses of flavonoid metabolites
  • Gene discovery using genomic and transcriptomics data, and biochemical characterization of enzymes in flavonoid and plant volatile biosynthesis
  • Lead the preparations of research publications
  • Lead the preparations of research documents to support patent applications
  • Contribute to grant proposals for extramural funding
  • Train and/or supervise graduate students and technicians in molecular and synthetic biology methods
