Job description

School / DirectorateCardiff School of ChemistryAdvertResearch Associate in Supramolecular Photochemistry
Cardiff School of Chemistry
Cardiff UniversityWe seek to recruit an enthusiastic, highly motivated scientist with proven intellectual and technical abilities to work on a project at the interface of synthetic chemistry and supramolecular photochemistry. The 1-year project is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. The project involves the design and synthesis of organic chromophores with long-lived and energetic excited states, with an emphasis on modulating their photo-induced properties by non-covalent interactions. Exquisite supramolecular control of the weak and dynamic interactions offers great potential to boost photochemical efficiency, minimising the need for lengthy covalent structural modification. It also allows the elucidation of fundamental excited-state dynamics through perturbative analyses. The applicant will take simultaneously the synthetic, spectroscopic, and computational approaches to control and analyse the structure and environment of the light-absorbing chromophores. A deep understanding of the structural and supramolecular parameters will expand the toolbox for solar-energy utilisation.Applicants must hold a postgraduate degree at the PhD level in synthetic chemistry, photochemistry, or supramolecular chemistry or have relevant industrial experience.Further information is available at the following group webpages:

Salary Range Max.44,263GradeGrade 6Salary Range Min.39,347Job CategoryAcademic – ResearchAdditional InformationProject DescriptionThis project aims to develop an innovative and generalisable molecular design to create heavy-atom-free, organic photosensitisers. The resultant materials will possess ample energy with a long lifetime in their excited state to efficiently transform sustainable solar radiation into electric or chemical energy. This project will deliver a wide selection of easily accessible and environmentally benign photosensitisers with tailor-made excited-state properties to complement or replace the commonly used ones based on scarce metal complexes. The detailed mechanistic study will unravel the critical structural features required to perfect the energy conversion efficiency in terms of the thermodynamic and kinetic considerations and eventually enhance our ability in controlling electron-spin for chemical and physical processes.Career PathwayResearchPerson SpecificationPerson SpecificationEssential CriteriaQualifications and Education1.
