Job description

Applications are sought for a Post-doctoral Research Associate position within the group of Dr Giacomo Crisenza at the University of Manchester (Department of Chemistry). The post is available from 15th November 2024, or soon thereafter, for 1 year in the first instance, with the potential for renewal for another year. The post is part of an EPSRC-funded research programme (ALKe-Syn – UKRI New Investigator Award 2024), seeking the implementation of new synthetic protocols that use renewable energy sources – such as electricity and visible light – to valorise carbon feedstocks. Specifically, the successful candidate will develop unprecedented enantioselective electrochemical and photochemical reactions enabling the conversion of “flat” unsaturated hydrocarbons (alkenes, alkynes, aromatics) into value-added three-dimensional chiral building blocks. These will expand the current chemical space towards previously inaccessible structures, and streamline the synthesis of medicines, agrochemicals, and functional materials. The candidate should hold a PhD (or equivalent) in organic chemistry, or related field, and have strong expertise in organic synthesis and standard analytical techniques (NMR, HPLC, CV, UV-vis, among others). Previous experience in synthetic radical chemistry and asymmetric catalysis would be ideal. The candidate should also demonstrate excellent communication ability, organizational skills, and predisposition to teamwork. For informal enquiries and details about the project, please contact Dr Crisenza ( ) with a CV, listing the contact details of referees, and a cover letter.Closing date: 31 October 2024The School of Chemistry is strongly committed to promoting equality and diversity, including the Athena SWAN Charter for gender equality in higher education.
