About usFrom its earliest years, the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN) has been fundamentally changing and shaping how we understand, prevent and treat mental illness and other conditions that affect the brain. The legacy, ethos and drive of the IoPPN has ensured its position at the forefront of mental health care, redefining mental illness, its treatment and its place in society.The IoPPN is divided into 14 academic departments across three major academic Schools: Academic Psychiatry, Mental Health & Psychological Sciences, and Neuroscience.The Department of Psychological Medicine, part of the School of Academic Psychiatry, focuses on the interface between psychiatry and medicine, psychiatry and occupation, psychiatry and the military, and psychiatry in different settings. We embrace research, education and clinical translation to further understand and improve mental health and treat disorders of the brain, and train the next generation of researchers and practitioners, as well as informing the wider community. The post holder will also work closely with academics in The Department of Psychosis Studies (Professor Fiona Gaughran and Dr Toby Pillinger), one of the world’s leading centres for research into psychotic disorders.About the roleThe postholder will work on the MRC Hub for Metabolic Psychiatry. This is one of five Hubs across the UK comprising the UKRI Mental Health Platform. The postholder will be the main researcher for one of the workstreams titled: ‘Development and testing of novel metabolic interventions for serious mental illness (SMI) in collaboration with people with lived experience’.They will conduct a detailed scoping review of metabolic interventions in SMI; work with people with lived experience and clinicians to define research priorities and inform co-production and design of future metabolic interventions in SMI. They will assist in the further development, setup and running of pilot studies for two of these interventions. They will also be involved in the analysis of data, drafting publications, and taking part in knowledge exchange and dissemination activities.This is a full-time fixed term post for 2 years.About youTo be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:Essential criteria * PhD qualified in an area related to the cross-over between physical and mental health (or pending results)

  • Expertise in the assessment of mental health symptoms
  • Experience in mixed methods research including analytical techniques and qualitative methods
  • Experience of maintaining a research database
  • Experience in writing and publishing research papers in high-quality journals
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to develop and maintain effective working relationships
  • Strong planning and organisational skills, including ability to work to and meet firm deadlines.

Desirable criteria * Experience of co-production with people with lived experience of mental illness

  • Experience in the assessment of research participants with mental illness
  • Experience of maintaining a research database for participants with mental illness
  • Experience of open science practices

In these circumstances the appointment will be made at Grade 5, spine point 30 with the title of Research Assistant.
