Job Description:Salary: Grade 7 (£36,023 – £45,585)Contract: Full-time (35 hours a week)Detailed DescriptionEPSRC Doctoral Prize Fellowship roles are funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) as part of Heriot-Watt University’s Doctoral Training Partnership award.The EPSRC Doctoral Prize Fellowship scheme is intended to help universities recruit and retain the best newly qualified doctoral (e,g PhD, EngD) students, and help them launch careers in research.Within the EPSRC Doctoral Prize Fellowshiphip scheme, the Innovation Expert (INE) post holders will work on projects within the with focus on the development of impactful, mathematics-driven innovation in varied areas of science and technology. INEs will interface between different areas of EPSRC remit, working on specific projects within the Centre for Mathematics-Driven Innovation (M-DICE), aiming to address industrial and/or applied sciences challenges by employing cutting-edge mathematical and statistical modelling.Key Duties and Responsibilities:As an Innovation Expert Doctoral Prize Fellow, the needs and aims of the projects will form the duties and responsibilities for the successful candidate.Education, Qualifications & Experience:The Fellowships are funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council as part of Heriot-Watt University’s Doctoral Training Partnership Award. The criteria below is that specified by EPSRC in their award terms.Eligibility Essentials * Innovation Expert Fellows must work on projects that lie within the
. Successful applicants will be expected to make significant and impactful interdisciplinary research contributions for the duration of the fellowship. * Innovation Expert Fellowships must commence before 31st December 2024. Fellowships can be 12 – 24 months.

  • Applicants must have received EPSRC studentship fundingand have completed their PhD up to 18 months prior to their starting date of the post, or are planning to submit their doctoral thesis soon. Candidates who have not yet submitted their thesis at the time of application are still eligible, but they must have submitted their thesis prior to the post’s start date, and the supervisor’s letter of support must clearly state the expected submission date. Where the viva exam has not taken place before the start of the Fellowship, the outcome must be an outright pass or pass with minor corrections otherwise the Fellowship will be withdrawn. If minor corrections are required, they must be done outside of the time allocated for the Fellowship.
  • Applications will be accepted from any student that received EPSRC doctoral funding at a UK institution (fees and/or stipend). This includes students funded by: Centres for Doctoral Training (CDT), Doctoral Training Partnerships (DTP), National Productivity Investment Fund (NPIF) and Industrial CASE studentships (I-CASE). Those who received funding via another of the Research Councils within UKRI are NOT eligible to apply for the EPSRC Doctoral Prize Fellowship.

Main duties and responsibilitiesThe INE will: * Conduct individual and/or collaborative research project(s), contributing to the design, execution, and management of the project(s), including meeting project milestones and participating in regular discussions with collaborative partners and their line manager.

  • Liaise with academics, industrial partners, in collaboration with the Centre for Mathematics-Driven Innovation to identify and develop interdisciplinary research projects.
  • Participate in meetings of the unit and prepare and deliver presentations/seminars internal and external.
  • Assist with the supervision and mentoring of postgraduate and undergraduate students working on related research projects.
  • Publish the results of research in reports and high-quality peer-reviewed academic journals.
  • Disseminate knowledge of research advances in computational science through activities such as conference presentations, workshops, and national or international research visits.
