Your Opportunity

The David Asper Centre for Constitutional Rights is a centre within the University of Toronto Faculty of Law devoted to advocacy, research, and education in the areas of constitutional rights in Canada. The Centre aims to play a vital role in articulating Canada’s constitutional vision to the broader world. It is the only Canadian centre in existence that attempts to bring constitutional law research, policy, advocacy, and teaching together under one roof. The Centre was established through a generous gift from University of Toronto Faculty of Law alumnus David Asper (LLM ’07). 

We are currently looking to hire a Research Associate (Limited Term) on a 2 year Term to provide legal research and advocacy support to the Asper Centre. The incumbent will work closely with Asper Centre students and partners including civil society networks and organizations.

The Research Associate Term position will be responsible for:

  • Conducts constitutional rights research related to Asper Centre projects, particularly in the areas of constitutional litigation, positive rights under the Charter and experiential education;
  • Research, draft, and edit policy papers, advocacy materials, legal submissions, and reports on constitutional rights issues;
  • Develop and implement advocacy strategies;
  • Assist with the research, development, and supervision of Asper Centre clinic projects;
  • Liaise with various stakeholders, including community partners.

Qualifications

EDUCATION:

  • Must possess an LLB or JD (LLM would be considered an asset)

EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum two (2) years’ work experience directly related to constitutional rights research and advocacy, including legislative advocacy.
  • Experience in constitutional rights advocacy and litigation (experience clerking with an appellate court would be considered an asset).

SKILLS:

  • Strong legal research skills
  • Excellent writing skills and excellent oral and written communications skills in English. Wide range of career experience including dealings with the media, funders, students, and the public is an asset.
  • Strong project management skills
  • Strong Computer proficiency (Microsoft Office applications: Word, Excel)

OTHER:

  • Highly motivated and organized; ability to manage multiple priorities and competing deadlines
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Demonstrated excellent judgement, problem solving skills and initiative
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment
