Salary:£37,099 – £42,978 Grade I;£41,732 – £46,974 Grade J, per annum, depending on experienceThe roleCorrelative Light Electron Microscopy (CLEM) combines the advantages of light and electron microscopy in one experimental workflow. Critical tools for CLEM are the markers used.We aim to generate a probe that will be directly visible both in the light and electron microscope. For this project the Verkade research group in the School of Biochemistry is looking for a Molecular Cell Biologist / Microscopist.The position of the (Senior) Research Associate will fill a critical role in delivering the aims of a BBSRC Technology Development grant in collaboration with the Borri research group at the University of Cardiff.Close collaboration and communication between and with the Verkade and Borri groups will be an essential part of the role and will be an exciting opportunity to learn state of the art imaging techniques.What will you be doing?Standard responsibilities of this project involves:

  • Lead the development of the cloneable Probe including design and cloning of constructs containing metal-binding motives (i.e. Metallothionein), possible in combination with GFP.
  • Perform the analysis of expression of the construct in mammalian cells using fluorescence microscopy.
  • Perform EM processing and analysis to resolve the localisation of the construct at the ultrastructural level.
  • Provide samples for the collaboration with the University of Cardiff.
  • Help establish future applications and opportunities for development of the construct to other biological questions.
  • Writing papers for dissemination and utilisation of the construct and workflow.
  • To work collaboratively within the Verkade group, the School of Biochemistry and our collaborators at the University of Cardiff.

You should apply ifYou have:

  • A PhD (or working toward one) or equivalent in a relevant field, plus experience in a relevant role or significant relevant work experience.
  • Proven experimental experience with the design and expression of gene constructs
  • Experimental experience and knowledge of the field of Biomedical Microscopy.
  • Experimental experience and knowledge of Correlative Light Electron Microscopy (senior research associate).
  • Proven ability to act as an independent researcher and proactively drive the development and direction of a research project.
