Campus: St. George (Downtown Toronto)Description:A Research Associate position in translational neuroscience funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research is available in the laboratory of Dr. Beverley Orser (www.orserlab.com). The lab is located in the Department of Physiology at the downtown campus of the University of Toronto.
The goal of the research is to understand physiologic and pathological processes underlying learning and memory, and to identify the mechanisms that contribute to a decline in brain function after anesthesia. Studies will focus on neurons and glia in the hippocampus and cortex. The long-term goal is to develop novel treatments that target subtypes of inhibitory receptors for cognitive disorders after anesthesia, as well as for inflammation-induced cognitive dysfunction and mood disorders. The position will involve wet lab research, project management, lab operations, and grant/manuscript writing and reporting. The successful candidate will also be expected to present research findings at conferences and submit papers for publication.Qualifications:We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic scientist with the following skills and experience:

  • PhD in biochemistry or neuroscience or molecular biology.
  • 2-5 years of Post-doctoral experience with demonstrated academic and research expertise in the field of biochemistry or molecular biology is an asset.
  • Strong background in electrophysiology, or biochemistry, and/or animal behavioral assays.
  • Strong experimental skills in: biochemistry, molecular biology, protein and RNA analysis.
  • Experience in Immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence is an asset.
  • Ability to work independently with strong problem-solving skills.
  • Design and execute experiments to support research activities and projects in the lab.
  • Strong scientific writing skills (manuscript preparation, grant writing, etc.).
  • Must demonstrate a good understanding of scientific principles, experimental design, and proper laboratory techniques.
