New Housing Alternatives for a Socially-Just Post-Covid Urban Canada (‘NHA’ for short) is a new research partnership project funded by SSHRC, with a mandate to research policy alternatives that will de-segregate, de-commodify, de-financialize, and de-colonize Canada’s housing system. The research team is co-directed by Dr. Alan Walks (UTM) and Dr. Susannah Bunce (UTSC), with many co-investigators, collaborators, and community partners from across Canada, as well as Australia, UK, the Netherlands, and elsewhere.The co-Directors invite applications for the position of a Research Associate to take on a leadership role in managing this highly interdisciplinary research partnership. Under the guidance of Professors Walks and Bunce, the candidate will be based at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM), and primarily responsible for pushing forward the research vision of the SSHRC-funded NHA project, including the many sub-projects envisioned as part of this larger partnership.The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge and experience in conducting primary research in urban studies and development, especially related to housing policy. They will have substantial experience in facilitating collaborations among researchers across multiple disciplines, and in thinking laterally to identify connections between apparently disparate research methodologies, as well as connections among academic and community partners.The incumbent will work in the Department of Geography, Geomatics, and Environment, at UTM. They will report directly to Professors Walks and Bunce. They will work with the projects’ co-investigators, collaborators, community partners, and Research Assistants to set future directions, build local and global collaborations and networks, and manage a range of team projects and individual projects effectively.The successful candidate will work independently to:

  • Assist with planning, scheduling, executing and monitoring collaborative work for NHA
  • Engage in primary research across a range of projects
  • Organize program workshops and symposia
  • Facilitate introductions and connections between researchers locally and globally

Organize travel to conduct field research and build partnerships * Prepare relevant funding applications, budget accounting, and project reports Support partners, staff, research assistants and students as requiredMaintain project records and ensure all grant reporting requirements are met * The incumbent will be expected to perform this work with a high degree of independence, and will design, direct, execute, analyse and present in written and oral forms novel investigative studies that build and draw on the incumbent’s academic experience as well as on the knowledge and experience of the NHA research team.Minimum QualificationsEDUCATION:Ph.D. in a relevant area of Geography, Planning, Housing Studies, or equivalentEXPERIENCE:

  • At least three (3) years of demonstrated expertise in postdoctoral research, with expertise in comparative study of housing and/or urban development, and/or related fields
  • Experience working with (and ideally, supervising) interdisciplinary teams of individuals in a university environment.
  • Experience in providing project management support

  • Ability to manage projects and co-ordinate research teams;
