The roleWe are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Research Associate (RA) to work the synthesis and application of smart functional materials for mobility assistance and digital healthcare technologies. This role supports the University of Bristol and the School of Chemistry in the £14 million EPSRC-funded project, “The VIVO Hub for Enhanced Independent Living” ( www.thevivohub.com ), co-led by Professor Charl F. J. Faul ( faulresearchgroup.com ). The VIVO Hub aims to create a user-guided intervention platform, integrating digital and robotic technologies to support older adults and people with disabilities in maintaining their mobility, physical health, and mental well-being at home.What will you be doing?We are seeking a world-class materials chemist or scientist with an innovative spirit and enthusiasm for cutting-edge materials synthesis and its application to soft robotics and digital healthcare. You will develop novel functional and smart materials for healthcare interventions, synthesising and optimising responsive materials for mobility assistance. You will join a dynamic research project led by the University of Bristol, in collaboration with numerous partners, including the NHS, leading UK and international research institutions, and industry leaders like Meta Reality Labs, Ottobock, and the National Manufacturing Institute Scotland. The selected applicant will work with 20 leading professors, clinicians and a team of 17 research and technical staff across multiple disciplines including soft robotics, materials engineering, biomechanics, bio-interfacing, and healthcare. You will gain valuable experience within a dynamic, fast-paced, and innovative research environment.You should apply ifYou should apply if you hold a PhD in chemistry or materials for soft robotics, or a related field, and have submitted your thesis prior to the appointment. You should have experience in the synthesis and preparation of smart materials for soft robotics, including in the synthesis of polymeric materials for wearable, implantable or high-power density artificial muscles. A track record of research outputs, evidenced by publications, patents or other metrics, and experience undertaking high-quality research of international standards is essential. You should possess the ability to innovate, justify and drive forward your research ideas. You should bring a strong passion for interdisciplinary projects. Excellent communication and organizational skills are crucial, as is the ability to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
