About us The Department of Anthropology at UCL is a research-led department with an international reputation, offering innovative teaching programmes at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels in both Bloomsbury and at UCL East. The department is one of only a few broad-based anthropology departments in the UK comprising five sub-sections: Evolutionary and Environmental Anthropology, Social Anthropology, Material Culture, Medical Anthropology, and Public Anthropology. UCL Anthropology is committed to prioritising issues of equality and social inclusion across all its activities.About the role We have an exciting opportunity for a research fellow to join our project titled “Music and Artificial Intelligence: Building Critical Interdisciplinary Studies” (MusAI). In this role, you will collaborate closely with senior academics to advance the ongoing research project “Sonic Social Genre,” bringing it to completion and preparing it for publication. Additionally, you will co-lead the postdoctoral team in developing and testing innovative interdisciplinary teaching methods based on the findings from the first phase of the MusAI program. The position will be available starting in March 2025 and will be funded by the ERC for a duration of nineteen months.About you You will hold a PhD in a relevant discipline that demonstrates both technical and critical expertise, as well as practical experience at the intersection of music and machine learning. Additionally, you should be familiar with the history of technical and philosophical debates about artificial intelligence across various disciplines. A track record of publications that reflect critical interdisciplinary engagement in the field of music and machine learning is essential, along with a demonstrated fluency in genre theory as it applies to music from the humanities and social sciences. High-level technical skills in machine learning, coding, and data analysis using R, Python, and C++ are also required.
