Research Fellow
University of Leeds
Overview of the RoleAre you a collaborative and self-motivated researcher looking for your next challenge? Do you have an interest in improving care for people living with dementia? Do you want to further your career in one of the UK’s leading research-intensive Universities? We are seeking to appoint Research Fellows/Senior Research Fellows to join our National Institute for Health Research Applied Research Collaboration, Yorkshire & Humber (NIHR ARC YH) Dementia Capacity Building Postdoctoral Training Programme. The posts are funded as part of a prestigious NIHR ARC YH & Alzheimer’s Society award and will be based at the Academic Unit for Ageing & Stroke Research, Leeds Institute of Health Sciences, located at the Bradford Institute for Health Research. The successful applicant(s) will join a regional network of dementia researchers, in partnership with the Centre for Applied Dementia Studies, University of Bradford, and national NIHR ARC Dementia Postdoctoral Researcher Network.NIHR ARC YH have prioritised research into prevention of dementia as a major evidence gap, with a focus on the 12 potentially modifiable risk factors outlined in the 2020 Lancet Commission report on dementia prevention, intervention and care. Our NIHR ARC YH Dementia Capacity Building Postdoctoral Training Programme will involve novel research to investigate:1. Health inequalities across the diverse populations of Yorkshire and Humber.2. How health inequalities impact upon capacity for dementia prevention within population groups.3. How interventions to prevent dementia at population and individual levels might be tailored to be acceptable and meet the needs of different groups, aiming to reduce health inequalities.Although these are core areas of interest for the planned work, we are also keen for researchers to outline their vision for research to support prevention of dementia, and align plans accordingly. We anticipate appointing postdoctoral researchers with a mix of methodological expertise. This includes researchers with qualitative research expertise, including intervention co-design, and researchers with expertise in epidemiology/biostatistics, including the use of routine health and care data for research. Although experience in dementia research is desirable, we recognise that many research skills are transferable, so encourage researchers who have experience in other related areas of health and care research to apply. The NIHR YH ARC Dementia Capacity Building Network is co-led by Andrew Clegg, Professor of Geriatric Medicine at the Academic Unit for Ageing & Stroke Research, University of Leeds and Siobhan Reilly, Professor of Applied Dementia Research at the Centre for Applied Dementia Studies, University of Bradford. The posts will be supported through the transition to independent researchers by the co-leads and their wider research teams, with the goal of building long-term research capacity in this strategically important area. Please note that this post may be suitable for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker visa route but first-time applicants might need to qualify for salary concessions.
