Research Fellow

University College London

Job description

About usOur pioneering research has significantly advanced the understanding of autoimmune diseases, particularly through her discoveries in the fields of gut dysbiosis, immune regulation, and regulatory B cells (Bregs). Mauri’s groups work has revealed that gut dysbiosis—an imbalance in the gut microbiome—can lead to increased gut permeability, allowing microbial components to breach the intestinal barrier and trigger autoimmune responses. Her research has shown that this breakdown in gut integrity plays a critical role in the development and exacerbation of autoimmune diseases.Equally transformative are her findings on regulatory B cells (Bregs), a specialized subset of B cells that help maintain immune tolerance by suppressing excessive immune responses. Mauri has demonstrated that Bregs are crucial in controlling inflammation and autoimmunity, particularly in their ability to produce anti-inflammatory cytokines like IL-10. Her work has highlighted the potential of modulating Bregs to restore immune balance in patients with autoimmune disorders. These discoveries have placed Mauri at the forefront of immunological research, positioning her work as a foundation for developing novel therapeutic strategies targeting both gut health and immune regulation in autoimmune diseases. We now aim to combine our immunological expertise to identify in detail how B cells contribute to the maintenance of gut-specialized epithelial cell health and what goes awry in rheumatoid arthritis (RA)About the roleThe successful candidate will join a dynamic group of basic and clinical scientists all working on integrated aspects of the immunopathogenesis and immunotherapy of autoimmune diseases with particular emphasis on Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) and Systemic Lupus Erythematous (SLE).The position is available until 2027 in the first instance.Note: Appointment at grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, the initial appointment will be at research assistant Grade 6B, with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.About youThe post holder will be an enthusiastic post-doctoral researcher, expected to perform high quality research under the direction of the principal investigator, Claudia Mauri, working closely with Professor Mario Zaiss and Dr Madura Castelino (Rheumatology consultant).
