About us UCL – London’s Global University – is one of the leading Universities of the World. The Royal Free Campus of UCL Respiratory includes clinical research teams active in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and tuberculosis (TB). Professor Hurst (https://profiles.ucl.ac.uk/3662-john-hurst ) is an NIHR Global Research Professor with an active programme of work in COPD both in the UK and overseas, aiming to reduce the burden of COPD. This post will provide statistical expertise and data analysis for Professor Hurst’s global health research programmes in COPD, whilst supporting the wider department on other respiratory research projects. UCL Respiratory is part of the UCL Division of Medicine. Through supervision by Dr Julie Barber, the post holder will maintain close links with the Biostatistics group within the Department of Statistical Science at UCL – the longest established university statistics department in the world. This is one of nine departments in the UCL Faculty of Mathematical and Physical Sciences (MAPS). The Biostatistics group works with the medical community through the UCLH/UCL NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) and the UCL Primary Care and Mental Health (PRIMENT) Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) and also conducts their own research into appropriate statistical methodology relevant to health care research. Both departments teach at all levels (undergraduate single/combined honours, service courses, MSc and PhD) including MSc courses in Respiratory Medicine and Medical Statistics. Benefits and policies relating to employees partners, includes both different sex and same sex partners.About the role The post is an exciting opportunity for a post-doctoral statistician with a strong background in statistics as applied to health research studies who would like to grow that skills set. They will gain hands on experience while collaborating on research projects including both randomised trials and observational studies. They will advise on study design and will be responsible for planning and carrying out analysis of study data. The primary focus will initially be on secondary analyses from the existing Global Excellence in COPD Outcomes study (see: PMID: 35015039, published in JAMA 2022) and later on leading analyses from a new programme of work to study diagnosis and management of COPD in Brazil, in collaboration with a team led by Professor Renata Mendes at the Federal University of San Carlos (UFSCar). Travel to Brazil will be part of the role, supporting the UFSCar team. In addition, the postholder will have opportunities to work on other applied research projects within Respiratory medicine and will also be able to develop their own methodological research portfolio and expertise. This may include opportunities to work with members of the Biostatistics Group at UCL Statistical Science. The postholder will be able to attend and contribute to the Statistics Department and the PRIMENT CTU seminar series on statistical methodology. The postholder will be located at UCL Respiratory (Royal Free Campus) and will be accountable to Professor John Hurst (UCL Respiratory) and Associate Professor Julie Barber (UCL Statistical Science). This post is available immediately and funded for a minimum of 1 year and a maximum of 5 years. Duties and responsibilities: • Undertake work including statistical analyses and relevant methodological research. • Collaborate on research projects and funding applications with health researchers within UCL Respiratory at the Royal Free Campus. • Publish in high-quality journals and participate in national and international conferences. • Advise and support health researchers to ensure the best possible design, conduct, analysis and reporting of studies in biomedical research. • Advise on preparation of reports for funding agencies and ethics committees. • Teach on UCL Respiratory and Medical Statistics Courses. • Maintain up to date skills and knowledge of statistical methods that are of relevance to health research studies. • Participate in Unit, Departmental and Faculty meetings and seminars as appropriate aimed at sharing research outcomes and building interdisciplinary collaborations. • Maintain effective communication and accurate records. • Maintain own continuing professional development. • Maintain an awareness and observation of fire and health and safety regulations. • Participate in and contribute to staff review and development. The ability to code in STATA is essential for this role and experience of coding in R would also be an advantage. You will be collaborative and reliable.
