Job title:

Research Fellow

Company

University College London

Job description

About usThe Institute of Behavioural Neuroscience (IBN) is a hub of UCL’s behavioural neuroscience community. Our researchers are interested in how low-level neural processes such as the actions of genes, proteins, neurons and neural circuits collectively translate to high-level processes such as behaviour, prediction, emotion and memory. The IBN currently has five PIs, all working with rodents and exploring various aspects of the neural encoding sensation, perception, cognition and action.About the roleApplications are invited for the position of a Research Fellow to join the Bendor Lab within the Institute of Behavioural Neuroscience at University College London, led by Prof. Daniel Bendor. The laboratory investigates how memories are prioritized for long-term storage by hippocampal replay. More broadly, the lab is interested in the role of the hippocampus in cognition, including memory consolidation and predictive coding. The post offers an exciting opportunity to use state-of-the-art experimental approaches to measure neural activity underlying cognitive functions and behaviour. The post-holder will carry out behavioural experiments studying the functional role of hippocampal replay in rodents, combined with optogenetics and large-scale electrophysiological recording methods, such as Neuropixels. Additionally, data analysis using MATLAB (or Python) will be used to analyse replay activity in large populations of hippocampal place cells. A variety of procedures related to ongoing experiments in the lab such as surgeries, perfusions, immunohistochemistry, and microscopy will also be performed. The position is funded for 2 years in the first instance.About youThe successful applicant will hold a PhD or be working towards a PhD in a relevant discipline (Neuroscience, Molecular Biology, Physiology, Medicine or a related field), and will have relevant laboratory experience, although training will be provided during the initial period.Experience working with rodent behaviour, large-scale electrophysiological methods, and optogenetics, in addition to data analysis using MATLAB or Python is essential. A Home Office personal License and techniques such as immunohistochemistry and microscopy are desirable. If you have any queries regarding the application process please email: pals.hr@ucl.ac.uk.A job description and person specification can be accessed at the bottom of this page.
