About usThe Department of Mathematics at UCL is an internationally renowned department within one of the world’s most prestigious universities. Since its beginning, mathematics at UCL has been enhanced by its many outstanding members of staff. Indeed, two of its students (and later staff) Professor Klaus Roth (1958) and Professor Alan Baker (1970) have gone on to win the Fields Medal. Another former member of staff Professor Tim Gowers won the Fields Medal in 1998 for work he did whilst at UCL.Since 2011, the department has grown considerably, with over 100 academic and honorary staff members, including fellows of the Royal Society. The department also has over 25 postdoctoral research fellows. We welcome a regular stream of distinguished visiting academics from home and abroad. The broad range of research interests is reflected in the wide choice of courses available in the third and fourth years of the degree programmes, from spectral theory, groups and geometry to fluid mechanics and from mathematical ideas in biology to cosmology. Research funding in the department from EPSRC, Leverhulme Trust and the Welcome Trust has grown significantly in recent years, with an increase of 70% in total funding since 2011.About the roleApplications are invited for two full-time Research Fellow positions to work with Jeffrey Galkowski on the ERC Synergy project Phase-space-inspired Numerical Methods for High Frequency Wave Scattering (PSINumScat). More information about the project can be found at .These posts are available from October 1, 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter. Salary will be UCL Grade 7, point 30-33 which is £43,124-£46,546 per annum inclusive of London Allowance.These posts are funded for 3 years in the first instance. Interviews are expected in February 2025.Candidates should either have a PhD or equivalent qualification in Mathematics, should be finalising their PhD or waiting for their viva date.Please note: Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent on award and confirmation of a PhD (or equivalent). If this is not the case, initial appointment will be at Research Assistant Grade 6B, point 28 (salary £41,005 per annum inclusive of London allowance) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.Job DescriptionDuties and responsibilitiesResearch

  • Carrying out vigorous, high-level research into the numerical analysis of high frequency waves.
  • Interfacing with other team members, and full participation in seminars and colloquiua in the subject
  • Submitting publications regularly in refereed journals and participating in national and international conferences

Teaching

  • The post involves no compulsory teaching duties, but as part of their professional development the Research Fellow may be offered the opportunity to take on teaching and/or supervision responsibilities appropriate to their experience

Management and Administration

  • Complying with institutional and departmental policies on Fire and Health & Safety Regulations, Equal Opportunities, and other matters
  • Undertaking administrative duties in line with the post
  • As duties and responsibilities change, the job description will be reviewed and amended in consultation with the postholder
  • The postholder will be responsible directly to Jeffrey Galkowski

About youEssential

  • Candidates should either have a PhD or equivalent qualification in mathematics, should be finalising their PhD or waiting for their viva date
  • The successful candidate will have a proven track record in research and publishing
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to facilitate participation in a research group
  • A strong desire to work at the heart of, and fully participate in, an active research group in the field
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral

Desirable

  • Interest and research experience with at least some of the following subjects: semiclassical analysis, microlocal analysis, numerical analysis
