This is an exciting opportunity for a virologist, viral Immunologist or Cell Imaging Scientist to join a multi-disciplinary consortium funded by Innovate UK, UKRI, in collaboration with Horizon Europe SUPREME (SUstainable nanoPaRticles Enabled antiMicrobial surfacE coatings). The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent respiratory viral infections highlighted our need to embed antimicrobial properties in the design of everyday products. We are looking for a postdoctoral scientist interested in containment level 3 infections with SARS-CoV-2 and Rhinovirus, to join an innovative team of scientists and companies from around the UK and Europe to develop the next generation of antiviral materials for pandemic preparedness.
The Research Fellow will culture infectious SARS-CoV-2 and Rhinovirus and design assays to test novel antiviral materials with a high content imaging readout. They will join the Stamataki lab at the University of Birmingham, comprising of scientists and clinicians interested in virus immunology, virus tropism and antiviral targeting, learning a broad range of techniques including cell and tissue culture, high content imaging and image analyses. This post is ideal for those that wish to gain experience in interactions with industrial partners, and those that are interested in developing a project for independent fellowship funding in the future. The group has additional expertise in viral immunology in human tissues with a focus on the liver.
We are based at the College of Medical and Dental Sciences, which offers excellent opportunities for researcher training and professional development.
