The University of Surrey is a global university with a world-class research profile and an enterprising spirit. Inventive and forward-thinking, its heritage shows a recurring theme of going its own way, doing things differently – and achieving notable results.  Furthermore, the University of Surrey regularly ranks as one of the top UK universities across a variety of league tables.

With over 40 members from more than 15 countries, the School of Economics at the University of Surrey enjoys a strong reputation for Research and Teaching in Economics, built upon a commitment to high quality, rigorously founded applied and theoretical research, often of direct policy significance. We have recently invested heavily to recruit staff whose innovative work is having a large impact on international research agendas, as also evidenced by being ranked 10th in the UK in the most recent research assessment exercise (REF2021). Surrey Energy Economics Centre (SEEC) in the School of Economics has a long-standing tradition of energy economics research, and has gone through many phases often consistent with the changing energy landscape.

The School of Economics is seeking to appoint a Research Fellow to investigate the demand for renewable EV (electric vehicle) fast charging station, and how to help with the uptake of the fast-charging technology from consumer perspective. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Dr Mona Chitnis , and in collaboration with other external project members, and will contribute to a wider programme of research within the FEVER project (Future Electric Vehicle Energy Networks supporting Renewables). The project is funded by EPSRC, and the work on consumers forms part of Research Objective 6 (RO6).

The candidate will use survey software and platform to design surveys and collect data for discrete choice modelling, and econometric techniques to estimate the willingness to pay (WTP) for FEVER technology attributes. The initial approach will be informed by microeconomics/behavioural economics and will use established econometrics techniques. The candidate will subsequently collaborate with the supervisor and project team in developing further applied econometrics research in this area. While focusing on disciplinary research, the candidate must also be able to interact and work closely with other interdisciplinary researchers both within RO6 and in FEVER as a whole.

This position would be suitable for an early career researcher who is working on topics related to the project and using the required econometric techniques. The position provides the opportunity to contribute to ongoing research in energy economics, and to develop future projects in these areas – subject to successful funding applications. The successful candidate ideally will have some experience of energy economics, and background in applied econometrics and applied microeconomics with experience of survey design for choice modelling – preferably using Stata and Ngene software.

The post-holder would be a member of SEEC and would be expected to play an active role in the academic life of SEEC and the School of Economics by helping out with SEEC related activities. The candidate will be expected to contribute to high quality (3-4* REF) outputs as well as to FEVER activities and broader engagement with stakeholders. The project budget includes funds to cover research expenses and to attend conferences and seminars to disseminate research findings.
