Between now and 2030 we will do that with a values-led approach to teaching, research and innovation, and through the strength of our relationships, both locally and globally.About the Team:Politics and International Relations (PIR) is one of the most dynamic and vibrant departments in the country. It seeks to provide excellence in teaching; to demonstrate genuine impact on the ‘real world’ of politics; to maximise its ratings in the Research Excellence Framework; and to establish Edinburgh as one of the outstanding locations in Europe for research on, and for the study of, Politics and International Relations. PIR was recently judged to be one of only three departments in the UK with a 100% 4* (world leading) research environment for staff and students.PIR is the largest subject area in the School of Social and Political Science in terms of both staff and student numbers. Staff expertise covers a wide range of topics, including comparative political science, public policy, international relations and political theory. Steady growth has enabled PIR to achieve critical mass in its strongest areas of research, which include multilevel governance and comparative (sub-state) territorial politics, European integration, security – including critical security, global ethics and international political economy. Staff collaborate with a range of Institutes and Centres.PIR’s research excellence is reflected in its outstanding scores in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF). It was ranked 6th in the UK on volume of 4* (world leading) research, and 8th based on a combination of research quality and volume of staff included in the assessment. The results reveal that PIR has quadrupled its 4* research since the last assessment exercise in 2008.PIR runs single and joint degrees in both Politics and International Relations. These four-year undergraduate degrees attract large numbers of highly qualified domestic and international applicants and there is strong demand for places on degrees as well as courses at the ordinary (years 1 and 2) and Honours (years 3 and 4) levels. PIR is also part of the School-wide QStep programme in quantitative methods offering students the opportunity to pursue Politics and IR degrees with an explicitly quantitative focus should they choose to do so.PIR offers several popular taught MSc degrees, including the long running International and European Politics (IEP) MSc as well as MScs in IR and IR of the Middle East and International Political Theory. It also collaborates with other departments within the School and across the College to deliver taught MSc programmes in environmental politics and human rights.PIR has long enjoyed ESRC recognition for its doctoral programme, and delivers research training for students through the Edinburgh-based Scottish Graduate School of the Social Sciences. PIR has approximately 60 students registered for research degrees (PhD and MSc by Research).Find out more at http://www.pol.ed.ac.uk/
