• The post is available due to an award of interdisciplinary research grant funded by the UKRI Cross Research Council. This role is for a qualified and experienced scientist/engineer who has been working in an academic or commercial research laboratory/company related to the biosensors and biomedical devices for muscle tissue/disease modelling and drug discovery. We design and fabricate biosensors and integrate with a human iPSC-based neuromuscular co-culture system and apply this system to the investigation of insulin-dependent glucose uptake by skeletal muscle. The biosensors will be imbedded with the device, providing real-time measurements of cellular function in vitro. We will closely collaborate with members of the partner groups of Dr Ivo Lieberam at King’s College London (a human iPSC-based neuromuscular co-culture system) and Dr Daniel Fazakerley at University of Cambridge (glucose metabolism). The aim of the projects is to establish a co-culture system that can be used to evaluate the impact of environmental and genetic factors on metabolic abnormalities that cause type 2 diabetes in humans, and to test potential therapeutics that stop or reverse the disease process.

• The post holder will contribute to the plan to deliver technical innovation and lead specified work packages developing the experimental plan with Professor Song and other members of the team, and allocating resources to the tasks within the plan. To ensure successful development of the cellular model device and progress towards understanding insulin resistance, the candidate requires a strong background/knowledge of biosensors, electrochemistry and polymer science and engineering. Experience in electrospinning technique, tissue engineering and cell culture is also desirable. In addition, they also require excellent interpersonal skills to work within and across a diverse and interdisciplinary team.

About youThe post holder must have a PhD degree in biosensor, electrochemistry, materials chemistry, biotechnology or medical devices or in a relevant discipline or equivalent professional experience
Expertise in biosensor, electrochemical sensors, point-of-care medical diagnostics, lab-on-a-chip, organ-on-a-chips, tissue engineering devices
Experience in fabrication of medical devices, electrospinning and polymer science and engineering.
