Research Fellow – Functional and Computational Genomics
UCL
About usBiosciences is one of the world’s foremost centres for research and teaching in the biological sciences and one of the largest Divisions within UCL, undertaking a significant amount of research and teaching. The Division has a diverse portfolio addressing all areas of biology from protein interactions to cell function, organism development, genetics, population studies and the environment. Much of our research crosses traditional boundaries, including the relationship of biodiversity to the planet’s health. Activity is underpinned by high-calibre science technology platforms and state-of-the-art equipment. Educational activity includes a range of undergraduate programmes and a substantial number of postgraduate research students. This is an exciting opportunity to join the research group of Professor Jürg Bähler as a Postdoctoral Researcher. We investigate the roles of conserved but unknown genes during cellular quiescence and ageing using fission yeast and turquoise killifish as model systems. We apply diverse genetic/genomic, cell biology, molecular/biochemical, and computational approaches to analyse gene function and cellular regulation, complex ageing-associated processes, and the relationships between the genotype, phenotype, and environment. More information on the Bähler laboratory is available here:About the roleYou will make independent and original contributions to the development and delivery of a substantial research programme funded by a Wellcome Discovery Award. You will apply large-scale genetic assays, functional profiling, and systemic/computational approaches to examine the roles of conserved yet unstudied proteins, with an emphasis on cellular quiescence and ageing. You will disseminate the findings as scientific papers, via community resources, through interaction with experts, and in conference presentations. The appointment will be for 3 years initially, with the possibility to extend for another 3 years.Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at Grade 6B with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis. This appointment is subject to UCL Terms and Conditions of Service for Research and Professional Services Staff. Please visit for more information.A job description and person specification can be accessed at the bottom of this page. For any questions about the role, please contact Jürg Bähler at .If you need reasonable adjustments or a more accessible format to apply for this job online or have any queries about the application process, please contact Biosciences staffing at .About youYou are curious, open-minded and highly motivated to pursue research into functional relationships and networks among genes and complex biological processes. You have a PhD degree (or PhD exam planned at the time of application), a strong research track record, and expertise in relevant areas (e.g., yeast genetics/genomics, computational data mining, network/clustering analyses, genome-wide interactions and quantitative traits, AI/big data).
