Job description

About usUCL Department of Chemical Engineering is one of the top research and teaching departments in the UK and has world-class standing. The department offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, and has an extensive research portfolio across a wealth of areas, from molecular scale to complex systems. This project will be conducted in the Manufacturing Futures Laboratory (MFL) (https://www.ucl.ac.uk/manufacturing-futures-lab/) at UCL East, UCL’s new campus on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, East London. The MFL is an innovative facility that brings together core expertise from four departments, enabling the development of new strategic research focused on knowledge-based manufacturing to deliver the sustainable products and processes of the future. You will also be affiliated with the UCL Centre for Nature-Inspired Engineering (https://www.ucl.ac.uk/nature-inspired-engineering/).About the roleRecombinant protein biopolymers have the potential to replace fossil-based polymers in numerous material applications. However, they are normally developed through low-throughput trial-and-error experimentation, which impedes rapid prototyping. To accelerate the exploration of their design space, we are seeking to recruit a Research Fellow to join Dr Diego Lopez Barreiro’s research group. The aim of this project is to lead research on the development of computational tools that apply molecular simulations to new recombinant protein biopolymers, in order to predict the mechanical/structural properties of materials manufactured from them.Salary is £43,124 – £44,230 per annum (inclusive of London allowance).Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at Grade 6B (salary £38,357 – £41,005 per annum) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD Thesis. This is a fixed term role until 31st July 2027 in the first instance. This appointment is subject to UCL Terms and Conditions of Service for Research and Professional Services Staff. Please visit for more information.About youThe successful candidate must have (or be in the process of being awarded) a PhD in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or Materials Science and Engineering (or a closely related discipline). Experience with molecular modelling (especially molecular dynamics simulation) and data analysis is essential for the post. You’ll have the ability to generate, analyse and document computational data and link it to experimental properties through efficient project management and creative problem solving. An ability to collaborate within a multi-disciplinary team is essential. What we offerAs well as the exciting opportunities this role presents we also offer some great benefits some of which are below:
