About usUCL Department of Chemical Engineering is one of the top research and teaching departments in the UK and has world-class standing. The department offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, and has an extensive research portfolio across a wealth of areas, from molecular scale to complex systems.About the roleThe project is funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) as an “international centre-to-centre research collaboration” between the Sargent Centre for Process Systems Engineering and JARA-CSD at Aachen. The project aims at to improving decision-making in complex processes and systems, through the development and integration of deterministic global optimisation (DGO) and machine learning (ML) technology.The main role of the postholder will be to carry out research in the areas of surrogate modelling, global optimization and robust optimization. The postholder will develop and implement novel data-driven methods for enterprise wide optimization problems uncertainty.Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at Grade 6B (salary £37,332- £39,980 per annum) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD Thesis.This is a fixed-term role for 18 months in the first instanceThis role meets the eligibility requirements for a skilled worker certificate of sponsorship or a global talent visa under UK Visas and Immigration legislation. Please visit for more information.About youThe ideal candidate will have:– A PhD in Engineering discipline, Operations Research or Computer Science. The applicant must either have already completed a doctorate, or have submitted their thesis prior to taking up the post
– Proven journal publications track record in developing novel techniques in the areas of surrogate process modelling and/or global optimization and/or robust optimization
– Experience with optimization packages (e.g. GAMS, Pyomo) and process simulation via gPROMS
– Experience in programming languages (e.g. Python, Julia), machine learning packages (e.g., Keras/PyTorch) and maintaining online repositories (e.g. GitLab/GitHub)What we offerAs well as the exciting opportunities this role presents we also offer some great benefits some of which are below:
