Job title:

Research Fellow in immune cell migration and chemotaxis

Company

University College London

Job description

About usBiosciences is one of the world’s foremost centres for research and teaching in the biological sciences and one of the largest Divisions within UCL, undertaking a significant amount of research and teaching. The Division has a diverse portfolio addressing all areas of biology from protein interactions to cell function, organism development, genetics, population studies and the environment. There are a number of cutting-edge microscopy facilities, and outputs from these are often combined with quantitative modelling approaches. Much of our research crosses traditional boundaries, including from life sciences to physics, computing and mathematics. Activity is underpinned by high calibre science technology platforms and state of the art equipment. Educational activity includes a range of undergraduate programmes, an expanding number of Masters Programmes and a substantial number of postgraduate research students. This is an exciting opportunity to join Robert Insall’s group. The Insall lab use quantitative microscopy and molecular genetics, backed up with computational models, to explain why cells move.About the roleThe main purpose of this position is to understand the signals that direct immune cells’ migration when they extravasate from blood vessels to tissues, guided by signals in the extracellular environment. As cells respond and migrate, they often inactivate these signals and may release additional, secondary attractants themselves, complicating experimental analysis. To address this complexity, we seek a biologist to set up haematopoietic cell lines that will allow us to analyze these processes quantitatively.Duties include maintaining and generating new haematopoietic cell cultures, performing and developing microscopy-based assays to test these cells, and interacting with dry lab members to accommodate experimental results with models. We use established cell lines and may establish others, as appropriate. 3D microprinting and device design & manufacture may also be important. If appropriate for the candidate we will also train them in coding and computational modelling. This role is an open-ended contract with a funding end date of 30/11/2026 in the first instance. The lab has multiple grants which may be extended.Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, initial appointment will be at Grade 6B (salary £37,332 – £39,980 per annum) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD Thesis.’This role is eligible for hybrid working with a minimum of 50-60% on site. This appointment is subject to UCL Terms and Conditions of Service for Research and Professional Services Staff. Please visit for more information.A job description and person specification can be accessed at the bottom of this page.If you have any queries about the role, please contact Robert Insall at r.insall@ucl.ac.ukIf you need reasonable adjustments or a more accessible format to apply for this job online or have any queries about the application process, please contact Biosciences staffing at biosciences.staffing@ucl.ac.uk.About youYou must have a Ph.D., equivalent qualification, or relevant subject area and proven experience and knowledge of cell biology, in particular live cell microscopy and/or molecular biology with cell lines.Experience in microfabrication, or coding and/or familiarity with computational modelling would also be useful. You will take part in the development, and delivery of research funded by the Wellcome Trust, generating novel insights into immune cell steering in vitro and in vivo. In addition to developing and conducting the research, you will communicate results as scientific preprints and papers and in scientific presentations at local, national, and international conferences. What we offerAs well as the exciting opportunities this role presents, we also offer some great benefits some of which are below:

  • 41 Days holiday (27 days annual leave 8 bank holiday and 6 closure days)
  • Additional 5 days’ annual leave purchase scheme
  • Defined benefit career average revalued earnings pension scheme (CARE)
  • Cycle to work scheme and season ticket loan
  • Relocation scheme for certain posts
  • On-Site nursery
  • On-site gym
  • Enhanced maternity, paternity and adoption pay
  • Employee assistance programme: Staff Support Service
  • Discounted medical insurance
