We are looking for a highly motivated Research Fellow to work on novel magneto-optic devices and sensors.

You will work in the world leading Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) and will have access to the world class facilities and dedicated researchers that this provides. Our labs are equipped with state-of-the-art equipment for experimentation on optical fibre sensing and devices. 

You will be part of the EPSRC-funded  project “Giant magneto-optic response in rare-earth doped glasses and manufacturing of related devices and sensors”, which aims to revolutionize sensing and devices based on Faraday rotation. The project will build a sensors and devices based on state-of-the-art optical technologies, such as novel isolators and ultrafst sensors for current detection. As a member of this project, you will be engaged in developing a novel magnetic field sensor for ns current pulses. This will require an in-depth understanding of optical waveguiding, Faraday rotation and detection architectures.

In addition to experimenting on sensing systems, you will contribute to their characterisation. You will be responsible for designing and executing the experiments that will best describe their behaviour and you will demonstrate their potential in sensing, often in collaboration with other researchers in the group and in the wider ORC.

To be successful, you must have a strong background in optical fibers and sensing with extensive practical experience. Ideally, you will also have experience in characterising optical fibres, photonic components, polarization rotation and/or the design and experimentation of high-speed optical communication systems.

You must also have proven skills in the critical evaluation and interpretation of data and of working as part of a collaborative research team. You must hold a PhD* or equivalent qualification related to fibre optics, photonics or material science. Previous postdoctoral experience is favoured but not necessary.

* Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.  The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD.  Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
