Job description

Offer DescriptionABOUT THE ROLEWe are excited to advertise a 3-year opportunity to join a vibrant research environment as a postdoctoral Research Assistant in Mathematical Physics /Applied Mathematics at Northumbria University. We have wide-ranging interests in dynamical systems and chaos, quantum and classical correspondence, linear and nonlinear waves, integrability and its applications in statistical mechanics, as well as numerical modelling. We welcome applications that cover the main subjects of the proposal entitled “Billiard field theory”. We will work with the successful candidate to bring their own unique skillset to address these scientific aims: generalize the semiclassical methods to study the quantum analogue of a field theory in the case of either integrable or chaotic classical limit. You will be supported to explore new methods beyond your current experience and develop your expertise in new techniques in mathematical physics/applied mathematics. This position is funded by the EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council), and you will work with Dr Rémy Dubertrand. You will benefit from the stimulating research environment of the Mathematics of Complex and Nonlinear Phenomena group. The position is funded for three years. and is available from the 1st of October 2024.ABOUT THE TEAMThis Research Project is being delivered within the Mathematics of Complex and Nonlinear Phenomena (MCNP) research group, part of the Department of Mathematics, Physics and Electrical Engineering. The group consists of 11 permanent members of staff and has firmly established itself as one of the UK’s leading groups in the areas of Nonlinear and Complex Systems. The MCNP group has high international visibility and enjoys funding from the Leverhulme Trust, EPSRC, LMS (London Mathematical Society), IMA (Institute of Mathematics and Applications). The group’s high research standing is evidenced by the organisation of the two recent large-scale programmes at the Isaac Newton Institute in Cambridge.Further details about the research group can be found .ABOUT YOUApplicants should hold a PhD in theoretical physics/applied mathematics and have demonstrable specialist expert knowledge in semiclassical methods, quantum mechanics. Expertise in classical or wave chaos, classical and quantum field theory, integrable PDEs, conformal field theory will be seen as an advantage. If you would like an informal discussion about the role, please contact .Further information about the requirements of the role is available in the .To apply for this vacancy please click ‘Apply Now’.
