About usEstablished in 2014 as part of the Mathematical and Physical Sciences (MAPS) Faculty, the UCL Institute for Materials Discovery (IMD) acts as a focal point of materials research at UCL across all departments. The IMD strives to be at the forefront of advanced materials research and teaching. We run state-of-the-art experimental and computational facilities and offer vibrant MSc programs across UCL’s Bloomsbury and UCL East campuses. We are pioneering novel data-driven approaches for materials discovery, understanding fundamental materials behaviour, developing innovative sustainable materials for new innovative applications and boosting enterprise (i.e., industry) oriented materials researchAbout the roleThe IMD wishes to appoint a Research Fellow interested in the development of novel liquid-based SERS substrates, metrology based on a ultra-compact Raman spectrometer, and advanced data analysis using machine learning models. The appointee will develop bespoke pretreatment approach for SERS samples, develop and implement machine learning models for SERS data analysis, and deliver and report on project reports with the funder.The position is centred at the UCL Bloomsbury campus in central London but will be offered opportunities to engage activities in the UCL East campus wherever appropriateThe post is a UCL grade 7 post, the salary for which ranges from £43,124 -£51,610 per annum (including London Allowance of £5,125) depending on experience.Appointment is at Grade 7 is dependent upon having been awarded a PhD; if this is not the case, the initial appointment will be at Research Assistant Grade 6B (salary £38,357 – £41,005 per annum including London Allowance) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.The position is initially till 28th February 2025, and is available immediately.About youThe successful applicant will have a PhD in Materials Science / Chemistry / Physics or relevant related discipline along with knowledge and experience in synthesis and self assembly of plasmonic nanoparticles, SERS measurements and data analysis. Knowledge and experience in machine learning models both classification and quantitative multiplexing models is essential. The applicant will be able to work well under pressure to meet time critical schedules, and work collaboratively yet independently, and have excellent communication and presentation skillsWhat we offerAs well as the exciting opportunities this role presents, we also offer some great benefits some of which are below:
