Research Fellow in Nanogenerator and AI Enabled Sensing

Job title:

Research Fellow in Nanogenerator and AI Enabled Sensing

Company

University College London

Job description

About usUCL is one of the foremost universities in Britain and the world. We host internationally leading research groups covering a broad range of activities and is spread over several sites. Our staff and students have a diverse range of interests and expertise, covering many areas of physics, engineering, medicine, physiology, computer science, and mathematics. This provides a highly stimulating multidisciplinary environment for learning and for scientific research. In addition to our research activities, we run a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes. This post is part-funded by the InspiringFuture (ERC Consolidator) project and by the new Central London NIHR Patient Safety Research Collaboration ( ). The NIHR Central London PSRC will focus on patient safety challenges in surgical, perioperative, acute and critical care, taking a pathway-based approach which will also therefore encompass primary and community care. The PSRC is organized into themes of activity, each with its own leads and research projects. It will also be home to a career development academy, supporting PhD students, postdoctoral and mid-career researchers, from both clinical and non-clinical backgrounds.UCL Mechanical Engineering and the Wellcome / EPSRC Centre for Interventional and Surgical Sciences (WEISS) at UCL bring together a wide team of engineering and clinical experts working to develop new surgical technologies. These advances are going to create intuitive and bespoke sensing technologies with high precision needed for better patient safety in critical and intensive care units. Greater precision also means more patients will be viable for patients and those treated will benefit from safer, more localized treatments and a shorter recovery time in hospital.Public and patient engagement is a core part of the WEISS/UCL Mechanical Engineering research and translation programme, and the NIHR Central London PSRC. Researchers are encouraged to consider how to involve and engage the public in ways that generate mutual benefit, for both research and the public. The PSRC is particularly focused on developing approaches and technologies which aim to reduce health and healthcare inequalities.About the roleWe invite applications for a research fellow (postdoctoral research associate) position to underpin our activities in (nano)sensors and artificial intelligence technologies. We will employ self-powered nanogenerator and/or artificial intelligence (machine learning) enabled sensor for a rapid and transformative positive impact on patient safety. Specifically, we will aim to prioritise perioperative and critically ill patients where reliable AI enabled sensors can have a particularly significant impact. The position is going to be part of UCL Mechanical Engineering and WEISS centre which have world class flexible electronics and sensor manufacturing facilities. The research fellow will have the opportunity to interact with researchers, leads and clinicians from across the NIHR Central London PSRC, while providing their own expertise around nanogenerators, sensors and AI (machine learning). Our emphasis is on rapid clinical translation, with the research fellow concentrating on the aspects of (micro)electronics engineering, prototyping new sensors and using data streams from existing sensing platforms to enable early and timely interventions by employing progressively evolving ML architecture. Previous experiences with sensor fabrication, flexible electronics, nanogenerators and AI/ML techniques will be especially welcome. The research fellow will work in close synergy with materials and robotics engineers, and clinicians to facilitate rapid translation of technology to clinic. The post is initially funded for two years and will be subject to standard probation and appraisal procedures. Consideration will be given to both Grade 7 and Grade 6b applicants to encompass both holders of PhDs and PhDs that are near completion.About youWe are keen to receive applications for existing PhDs or candidates whose PhDs are near completion with expertise in electronics/electrical engineering, robotics or physics or a related field to enable experimental research in flexible electronics and wireless sensing. To be a success in this role you must have an excellent track record of research in nanogenerators and/or AI/ML. Basic programming, and data acquisition and analyses using software tools such as Matlab, Python, Labview are essential. You must also have demonstrable communication skills and an interest in engaging in some department teaching activities. While not essential, your application will be enhanced if you have expertise in nanogenerator based sensing and ML/AI platforms and/or notable publications in one or more areas ranging from wearable/implantable sensors, nanogenerators etc. An interest in contributing to pertinent teaching (UG/PG) and PhD supervision activities and the ability to support the preparation of research proposals to secure external funding will also strengthen your application. What we offerAs well as the exciting opportunities this role presents, we also offer great benefits.
