Job description

The Energy Technology Group at the University of Southampton invites applications for a post-doctoral research assistant position in the area of experimental optics with applications to soft matter, lamellar liquid crystals and lubrication. The main focus of the project is to establish structure-property relationships between different nano-structured films and their optical response. This position is ideally suited for researchers interested in optical imaging techniques and in developing new, microscopy-based, experimental technique to characterize films in tribological contacts. The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary project, sponsored by the EPSRC, carried out by an international team of experimental chemists, physicists, and engineers. To support the extensive experimental side of the programme, you will have strong practical skills and a track record in the areas of optical microscopy, optics, or photonics. Your prime responsibilities will be the development of the bespoke version of an optical setup fitted on the tribometer, its operation, testing its capabilities, running experiments, and formulating protocols for its optimum use under various operating conditions. Thus, a PhD-level or post-doctoral experience in aligning and setting up the bespoke optical set ups is essential. Working with soft matter/organic layer samples would be beneficial. As a member of the Energy Technology Group within Mechanical Engineering at Southampton you will benefit from the extensive network of collaborations with members of the group. There will be an opportunity to guide PhD and Master students.Funding is available for three years starting from 1 December 2024.For further information please contact Dr Monica Ratoi ([email protected])Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.
