It has been ranked #1 in the world for the second year in a row in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024 (Architecture and Built Environment), and remains #1 in the UK for the tenth year running.Set within The Bartlett Faculty, The Bartlett School of Environment, Energy and Resources (BSEER) is comprised of four world-class institutes, providing expert knowledge, collaborative research, and teaching across UCL Energy Institute, UCL Institute for Environmental Design and Engineering, UCL Institute for Sustainable Heritage, and UCL Institute for Sustainable Resources.The UCL Institute for Environmental Desing and Engineering pursues a deeper understanding of the interactions between the built environment and health, human wellbeing, productivity, energy use and climate change.About the role The role of the successful applicant(s) will be to carry out indoor environmental quality and energy modelling in a range of building types and sectors and for different occupancy profiles to quantify indoor environmental exposures in the context of Net Zero targets and a changing climate, with a potential focus on vulnerable populations.The candidate should have extensive experience in computational modelling, and in particular, experience in the dynamic building performance simulation software EnergyPlus (or have expertise of running a similar building performance simulation software and the ability to adapt to using EnergyPlus). They should have the ability to handle and analyse large datasets, using suitable software such as R, Python, Matlab or similar. Further experience in building stock energy or indoor environment modelling would be desirable.The ideal candidate is a highly quantitative and analytical person with a PhD or close to completing a PhD in built environment, physics, climate, environmental, or atmospheric sciences or a related quantitative field, and a keen interest in transdisciplinary research.This post is available from 1 May 2025 and is currently funded until 31 January 2028. Further funding may become available.UCL welcomes applications from international applicants and has licence to sponsor individuals who require a visa. This is dependent on the post and candidate meeting eligibility requirements for visa sponsorship under UK Visas and Immigration legislation.About you • An emerging reputation as an independent researcher in a research field that is relevant to the subject area, with publication record appropriate to career stage

  • Experience in the EnergyPlus software (or considerable experience in dynamic building performance modelling and the ability to become skilled at EnergyPlus) and analysing output, and experience in statistically analysing large datasets
  • PhD in built environment, physics, climate, environmental, or atmospheric sciences or a related quantitative field, or commensurate experience
