Detailed job description and main responsibilitiesFor further information on this role, please see the attached detailed Job Description and Person Specification.Research Radiology Review Service
- Provide specialist radiological imaging knowledge and radiation dose information to the clinical research units and commercial sponsors. This requires the post holder to be actively involved in all matters concerning diagnostic and interventional radiology exposures of patients.
- Provide information to the clinical research units and commercial sponsors on the requirements for research exposures arising from UK legislation, the Health Research Authority etc.
- Provide, in collaboration with the clinical research units, accurate and timely synopses of the type and frequency of radiological exposures required by research study protocols and undertaken as part of routine clinical care.
Diagnostic Radiology Physics Service
- Participate, as appropriate, in the provision, planning, and development of the Diagnostic Radiology Physics Group’s quality assurance service to ensure compliance with the requirements of clinical research studies. This includes acceptance testing, commissioning and periodic quality control testing of complex, patient-critical x-ray equipment. Equipment testing requires high precision measurements using sophisticated x-ray measuring equipment; analysis of complex and inter-dependent test data; preparation of reports in a well-presented, timely manner using complex computer spreadsheets; interpretation of test results for radiology staff, research staff and research associates; and making recommendations in order to ensure compliance with relevant legislation, national and local standards and agreed good practice.
Radiation Protection
- Participate in the design of radiation protection facilities and the layout of X-ray rooms in order to minimise radiation dose to staff, patients and members of the public. This work includes carrying out measurements using radiation monitoring equipment and performing highly complex shielding calculations. It involves liaison with Estates, building contractors and equipment suppliers.
Education, Research and Development Responsibilities
- Undertake and participate in internally and externally funded research and development projects within the Diagnostic Radiology Physics Group. Areas may include development of patient dosimetry tools or image processing algorithms.
Person specificationEducationEssential criteria
- 1st or 2nd class Honours degree in physics or other related subject.
- MSc in Medical Physics [or equivalent]
- Achieved, or close to achieving, HCPC registration as a clinical scientist
Desirable criteria
- Corporate membership of an appropriate professional body
- Recent Good Clinical Practice training
- PhD in physics related discipline.
ExperienceEssential criteria
- Relevant and structured experience across the range of working procedures and practices in diagnostic radiology physics
- Demonstrable contributions to the development or applications of medical physics. Suitable research and development experience in other areas might also be considered acceptable.
- Substantial experience of using PCs. Able to use Excel to develop custom spreadsheets with macros for data analysis
- Experience of using image acquisition and image reviewing workstations for image manipulation and analysis. Experience of using computers in a networked and PACS environment.
- Experience in programming using image processing software such as Python or IDL.
- Current evidence of Continuing Professional Development.
Desirable criteria
- Relevant and structured experience in the application of radiation legislation and Health Research Authority guidelines to the use of ionising radiation in research.
- Experience of using dose management systems / software for auditing patient exposures
- Relevant and structured experience in nuclear medicine physics.
