We are a small team on a big mission to plant 1 billion verified trees by 2030 with our community of businesses, planting organizations, and consumers who believe in the transformative power of verified restoration projects to create real and meaningful impact for the planet, nature and people.About the Role:We are seeking an experienced technical research leader to join our team as the Research Manager for nature technology. This individual will be accountable for driving Research and Development (R&D) outcomes with partner institutions to create scalable solutions. The successful candidate will report to the Director of Science and will partner closely with veritree’s Data Scientist and Geospatial and Field Technology Lead to transform R&D into Applied Science Products.Key outcomes for this role in the next 12 months include:

  • Create systems to ensure all partner R&D projects track towards scalable outcomes that can be piloted in veritree’s platform.
  • Deliver high-priority Carbon, Biodiversity and Socioeconomic R&D outcomes that can be embedded as science-backed MRV solutions across veritree’s planting sites.
  • Identify key nature technology gaps within the product and opportunities for collaboration, R&D or integration with other providers.

The ideal candidate would be located near our Vancouver, BC head office, however, we are open to receiving applicants who are located anywhere in Canada or the US (and who are legally able to work in their country of residence).Key Responsibilities:Manage R&D projects to produce scalable outcomes

  • You will build and lead the R&D function for key areas of impact and risk assessment to ensure the platform incorporates the most scientifically robust approaches.
  • You will ensure timely project delivery through efficient project operations and management.
  • You will partner with research institutions to develop Proof of Concept models to be scaled by the veritree team.
  • You will provide technical support to partners through geospatial expertise and modelling guidance.

Shape veritree’s nature technology roadmap to be best-in-class

  • You will ensure ongoing research is situated within the latest dMRV trends through active engagement within the field and industry coalitions.
  • You will conduct gap analysis on the veritree offering and seek to fill gaps through R&D and collaboration opportunities.

Identify opportunities for R&D partnerships and technology integration

  • You will establish and nurture relationships with key universities, academics and research institutions.
  • You will identify funding opportunities for R&D.
  • You will develop partnerships within the sector.

RequirementsProfessional Requirements:

  • 5+ years of relevant professional experience, working in a highly collaborative team environment.
  • MSc in Environmental Engineering, Applied Science, Remote Sensing or other related technical fields. PhD is an asset.
  • Technical experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) analysis to assess, monitor and verify nature-based climate solutions.
  • Experience with statistics and an understanding of the potential applications of data science and machine learning.
  • Experience leading technical teams and data scientists to produce innovative outputs.
  • Working knowledge of Python or R (preference for both)
  • Experience identifying and securing research funding (preferred)
  • Experience with using Asana or other project management software (preferred)

A typical hiring range for this position is $90,000 – $130,000 CAD per year with the final salary offer based on your qualifications, job-related skills, and relevant experience.
