Research Officer with Maternal and Child Nutrition under the Nutrition Research Division (Adv#156/2023)

icddr,b is a Bangladesh-based international health research institute that strives to solve key public health problems through high-quality scientific research and innovation. As a values-based organization, icddrb encourages women and people with disabilities.

In “Understanding the role of bacteriophages in child stunting” study, a research team of icddr,b will compare phage and bacterial communities obtained from stunted children and their healthy counterparts with metagenomics (bacterial 16S and phage genomics) over the course of 24 months (with a monthly-sampling setup), and will perform in vivo cross-infection experiments between these communities in a mouse model of caloric restriction with stunting. The proposed study will generate paramount knowledge on the impact of phage diversity in maintaining the balance between the commensal and pathogenic bacterial communities in the gut of children at early age. The study outcome will pave the way to develop therapeutic intervention to restore the bacterial communities in the gut of stunted children.
