We are currently seeking a Director for our Analytical Science group within Chemical Development. This is your chance to be part of a team that works across the entire value chain, designing and delivering active ingredients, formulations, and devices required to support new medicines and commercialisation of products.This role will develop, drive, and implement the Science Technology and Strategy in Chemical Development. This will be achieved through close collaboration with colleagues within Chemical Development and beyond interacting groups such as xSITE, Manufacturing Science & Technology, Product Development, Inhalation Product Development, Pharmaceutical Science and Discovery Chemistry groups.The role holder will drive the Chemical Development activities that help ensure that Pharmaceutical Technology & Development has world-class capabilities in its prioritized areas.Accountabilities:

  • Develop, drive and implement the Science, Technology and Strategy for Chemical Development. Agree plans with the different skill groups and capabilities within Chemical Development.
  • Work in close collaboration with colleagues in xSITE, Manufacturing Science & Technology, Chemical Development, Pharmaceutical Science, and Discovery Chemistry to drive a coherent overarching approach to CMC Science & Technology.
  • Manage Chemical Development’s Science and Technology project portfolio to deliver opportunities for improvement and to respond to the future needs of the AZ drug project portfolio. This role holder is accountable for co-ordination and prioritisation of current and future activities, whilst optimising resource utilisation and tracking our progress by:
  • Working with S&T Strategy areas leads, and the CD leadership team to ensure all non-TA projects and science and technology initiatives have strategies and associated plans including budgets and resources.
  • Operating a governance process to allow ideation, incubation and industrialisation to be tracked and reported.
  • Development and tracking of the CD Scorecard in alignment with PT&D and Operations strategic goals
  • Facilitating communication of S&T and Strategy activities in collaboration with area leads
  • Utilising Change Management to embed new ways of working and capturing of benefits in combination with S&T Strategy area leads and other improvement leads
  • Ensure Chemical Development Science & Technology activities make best use of opportunities for external collaboration.
  • Lead key external collaborations and interfaces as appropriate.
  • Influence external stakeholders (e.g research funding agencies and academia) such that wider research and development activities are directed towards Pharmaceutical Technology & Development Science & Technology needs.
  • Energise and focus Senior Science Ladder staff to deliver the current drug project portfolio while also developing Chemical Development’s future science and technology capability.
  • Be the champion of science and technology across Chemical Development at all levels. Publicise Chemical Development Science & Technology in all arenas: within Chemical Development, within Pharmaceutical Technology & Development, within AstraZeneca and externally.
  • Be a committed and proactive member of the Chemical Development Leadership Team, contributing towards Team Effectiveness.

Essential Skills & Experience:

  • Likely to have a strong scientific background such as PhD in Chemistry, Engineering or equivalent with extensive experience within the business and industry.
  • Have an excellent understanding of the overall drug development process from discovery through launch and into the commercial phase and an appreciation of how Pharmaceutical Technology & Development contributes to R&D and the broader business.
  • Have a deep understanding of the scientific disciplines that are essential to Chemical Development’s success.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to build excellent relationships with senior stakeholders within AstraZeneca and externally while also being able to engage with scientists at all career levels within Pharmaceutical Technology & Development.
