Key research themes include protein homeostasis (focussed on targeted protein degradation) and next-generation antibody drug conjugates.DescriptionBiology (Scientist)Hours: 37.5 hours per week (maternity cover – fixed term 12 months)Salary: CompetitiveRef No: HRJOB9801Business Unit: Almac DiscoveryLocation: BelfastOpen To: Internal & External CandidatesThe RoleAn exciting position is now available at our Belfast site to help further our protein drug discovery efforts.Working as part of the biology drug discovery team, the successful candidate will support our programmes developing novel targeted protein therapeutics, with a focus on engineered antibody / protein-drug conjugates and protein degraders for oncology indications. With a broad background in molecular and cell biology/biochemistry, primary responsibilities include the characterisation of antibody drug conjugates and small molecule inhibitors against a variety of anti-cancer targets and to contribute to the preclinical development of these novel therapeutic agents in multiple oncology indications.The successful candidate will be able to work independently on several concurrent projects in a fast-paced goal-oriented setting with minimal supervision and have the flexibility to learn new techniques according to projects need. Furthermore, you will efficiently contribute to the maintenance of a functional laboratory, technical equipment and tools, as required for best practice and in-line with HSE guidelines. The aim is to develop the next generation of therapeutics to provide improved patient benefit.The role will involve close interaction with colleagues in cancer biology and medicinal chemistry at our Belfast site and with our protein engineering and bioinformatics groups based in Edinburgh and Manchester respectively. Prior experience in industry and / or the development of small molecule or protein therapeutics would be beneficial but is not a requirement.This is a significant opportunity to play a central role in the further development of Almac Discovery as an innovative and successful biotechnology company. Preference will be given to a highly motivated individual who will thrive in a collaborative research and development environment. The candidate must demonstrate outstanding analytical and strategic thinking in addition to driving scientific excellence.Candidate SpecificationEssential Criteria

  • PhD in biology, biochemistry or another relevant life science discipline (significant, relevant work experience may be considered in lieu of PhD at Scientist level).
  • Experimental knowledge and hands-on expertise in molecular and cell biology and/or cancer biology.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of cell biology, including mammalian cell-culture and other basic molecular techniques.
  • Experience of working collaboratively in a high paced scientific environment with the ability to think independently and creatively.

Desirable Criteria(The following criteria may be applied if a large pool of applicants exists)

  • Additional practical laboratory experience in an industrial or academic setting in a relevant discipline.
  • Previous experience in pharmaceutical R&D or related research environment
  • Experience in the development of protein / antibody therapeutics or antibody / protein drug conjugates.
  • Knowledge and experience of targeted protein degradation and PROTAC based therapeutics
