Job Description

The Drug Metabolism and Disposition group in DMPK-BA has an open position for a Senior/Principal Research Scientist to lead drug metabolism and mass spectrometry imaging studies to support discovery and development. The selected candidate will be responsible for designing and conducting ADME investigations, interpret results, and apply knowledge to drive the pipeline and answer key scientific questions. In addition, the candidate will be responsible for the utilization and advancement of MALDI-MSI technology to develop our understanding of tissue distribution as related to safety assessment, metabolism, drug-drug interactions, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacology. The candidate will collaborate across various disciplines within AbbVie including DMPK, chemistry, biology, toxicology, pathology, clinical and regulatory to support biotransformation. The individual is expected to have a high level of practical experience in mass spectrometry, biotransformation, mass spectrometry imaging, analytical method development, metabolite profiling, handling radioactive compounds, technology development and possess strong written and oral communication skills. Duties are initially focused on laboratory work but will be expanded to broader responsibilities based upon interest, ability, and project needs.

Key Responsibilities Include:

  • Design, perform, interpret, and report appropriate data from biotransformation and imaging studies for identifying metabolite structures, associated pathways, and distribution in tissues

  • DMPK subject matter expert and provides clear data interpretation and strategy to DMPK colleagues, project teams and management

  • Ensuring a world-class scientific approach to MS imaging by implementing and developing tools and processes.

  • Leading scientific initiatives to improve MSI capabilities and combining other imaging techniques (histology, microscopy, and radio imaging) to support drug discovery and development.

  • Routinely operate LC-MS/MS instrumentation, including maintenance and troubleshooting.

  • Writing or contributing to study reports and regulatory submissions.

  • Keeps well-informed of literature; Evaluate new methods, technologies, study designs and equipment.

  • Utilizes expertise to direct projects and is visible outside of functional area

  • Accepts supervision of associate scientists as required

  • Provide training, development and guidance to staff.

Qualifications

  • Motivated Ph.D. in life sciences with 10+ years, MS with 15+ years relevant academic or industry research experience in small molecule development.

  • Expert in mass spectrometry and drug metabolism processes, including method development, metabolite profiling, metabolic processes, and related techniques

  • Experience writing regulatory documentation is preferred

  • Understanding of drug metabolizing enzymes, transporters, and pharmacokinetic principles is preferred.

  • Broad experience in mass spectrometry imaging analysis on both small and large molecules

  • Advanced training with radio-active material is preferred

  • Strong interpersonal skills, the ability to work independently with minimal supervision in managing multiple projects and priorities and work well within a team

  • Strong presentation and written/verbal communication skills.
