John Wenman Ecological Consultancy LLP is an independent ecological consultancy established in 2006 and based in Wokingham, Berkshire. We specialise in bat surveys and mitigation, and have a track record of providing high quality ecological and nature conservation advice to established clients in the private and public sectors. Our project list is diverse and mainly within southern England.

Seasonal Assistant Ecologist (Wokingham, Berkshire)

The role:

We are looking for an enthusiastic graduate ecologist to join our close-knit team to assist us with ecological survey, mitigation and supervision work. Projects will include assisting with ecological appraisal and protected species work, with a focus on bat survey and mitigation. We are looking for someone keen to expand their ecological skills in a friendly environment with close support from a small team of experienced ecologists. The work will be full time for a six-month period from April, although we will consider part time positions for suitable candidates. We work flexibly and there will be scope to work from our office in a rural location on the edge of Wokingham and from home. The role will require some evening and night work.

Skills and experience

Essential

  • Degree in ecology related discipline;
  • Broad experience of ecological survey and mitigation techniques,
  • Good understanding of relevant UK and European legislation, policy and guidance;
  • Full driving licence and use of own vehicle;
  • Membership of CIEEM or eligibility to apply for membership
  • Excellent report writing and data management skills with a close attention to detail;
  • The ability to use a range of field equipment and software including MS Word and Excel.

Beneficial

  • Experience of using GIS software (especially QGIS);
  • Masters degree in Ecology or closely related discipline;
  • Previous experience of bat survey work, particularly detector surveys;
  • Prior experience of video and bat call analysis software;
  • Experience of habitat and protected species surveys and mitigation.
