Seasonal Assistant Farm Worker

We are looking for an Assistant Farm Worker to join the team at Sedgemoor Reserves to play a key role in delivering habitat management in one of the most important wetlands in the UK. What’s the role about?

This role will undertake daily routine care of cattle on site from May to October as part of a team. This will include safe movement between locations, penning and rescue from ditches whilst maintaining high welfare standards and H&S compliance for staff and volunteers.

In addition to livestock care you will undertake a range of habitat and agricultural management activities on the reserve, including hay cutting, topping, fencing, and general estate management to produce the conditions required to deliver the ecological management plan objectives.

Other key areas of work will include:

• Working as part of a team to undertake daily routine care of cattle including safe movement between locations, safe penning and restraint, large animal ditch rescue, whilst maintaining high welfare and H&S compliance standards
• Undertake a range of habitat and agricultural management of the reserve, including vegetation management, hay cropping, electric fencing, and general estate management to produce the conditions required to deliver the ecological management plan objective.
• Undertaking administrative duties required to maintain all relevant paperwork and recording requirements relating to animal movements, livestock health and welfare, and machinery and estate maintenance.
• Contributing to the delivery of the farming and grazing objectives in the reserve management plan and annual report as directed by the Warden.
• Ensuring good relations at all times with neighbours, graziers, suppliers, vets, external organisations and the general public to facilitate delivery of site/s and RSPB’s objectives.
• Assisting with monitoring of critical species and habitats.
• Assisting with the maintenance and operation of machinery and agricultural equipment by undertaking day-to-day maintenance, repair and visual checks to ensure the efficient, safe and appropriate use of machinery.
• Assisting with monitoring of critical species and habitats.
• Working with and assist with leading volunteers where needed for delivery of your work programme.

Essential skills, knowledge and experience:

• Ability to work in a team.
• Basic experience of livestock farming.
• Ability in the handling and movement of cattle.
• Skills in the use and maintenance of agricultural machinery in field operations.
• Ability in a range of land management tasks related to the grazing operations e.g. building and maintaining fences, gates, electric fencing and livestock holding pens.
• Problem solving skills.
• A full driving licence which is valid for use in the UK (manual cars).
• LANTRA or equivalent qualification in using equipment such as tractor with implements and sit astride ATV

Desirable skills, knowledge and experience:

• Experience of living in and working in remote areas and small communities.
• Working with graziers, hauliers, contractors and neighbouring farmers.
• Record keeping/data management.
• Estate management, building maintenance.
• Experience of volunteer management. Knowledge of wetland ecology and species.

Additional Information:

• This role will involve lone working and working in remote locations.
• This role will require regular weekend work and occasional unsocial hours, so will need someone who is able to be flexible.

This is a Fixed-Term Full-Time role for 37.5 hours per week for six months.

The RSPB reserves the right to extend or make this role permanent without further advertising dependent on business needs at the end of the contract term.
