Job summary

The Department of Brain Sciences is seeking a Section Manager. You will be responsible to the Divisional Manager for providing efficient administrative and management support to allocated staff and students based in the Division of Neurology. This is an exciting opportunity for personal development and to gain valuable experience in a broad range of administrative processes within the Department. It presents an excellent opportunity for a junior administrator to gain experience in a more senior role.

Duties and responsibilities

You will be responsible to the Divisional Manager for the administration of Finance and HR for research groups within the Department. In this role, you will be the primary point of contact for all academic and research staff within their group for administrative and operational issues. This includes assisting with grant research applications, from costing through to submission via the funder online system and research post-award administration.

You will monitor and ensure the appropriate use of non-research funds and provide advice and guidance on recruitment and personnel administration activities. They will support academic staff, acting as a bridge between the department, research services, the contracts management team, and HR for both research proposals and the management of awarded grants and contracts. They will also assist the designated group with ad hoc administrative tasks.

Essential requirements

This is a multifaceted and challenging post that requires a strong and diverse set of skills, comprising excellent communication, financial management, organisation management, and problem-solving skills.

In addition, you will need the ability to develop effective working relationships with colleagues at all levels, and it is essential that you can work efficiently and accurately under pressure. Prior knowledge of FEC, grant funding rules, and the College costing system, Work Tribe, is desirable but not crucial as comprehensive training will be provided.

The Department has a strong focus on the development of its staff and you will be encouraged to take advantage of the range of courses offered by the College and expected to undertake any training necessary, to develop your skills to meet the requirements of your role.

The College is currently trialling a Work Location Framework until early 2023.  Hybrid working may be considered for this role and the role holder may be expected to work 60% or more of their time onsite, with 40% the minimum time spent onsite.  The opportunity for hybrid working will be discussed at interview.
